Bulls Summer League

Bulls' first summer league game was last night. Bulls beat the Timberwolves and their stacked roster of Karl Anthony-Towns, Zach Lavine, Adrien Payne, Tyus Jones.

Box score and highlights: http://www.nba.com/games/20150711/CHIMIN/gameinfo.html

Bobby Portis was star of the game; Doug McDermott not too far behind. Portis w/ 23 points in 27 minutes and flashed basically the whole package offensively...fast break finishes, drives, mid-range, 3-pt shooting, and post ups. Very impressive game.

McDermott played more an off the ball game taking advantage of the fast pace Hoiberg was pushing his guards to play. Ended up with 20 points (9-16 shooting) on a number of good finishes in traffic around the hoop, with a few jumpers thrown in for good measure.

Other nuggets...they interviewed Gar Forman and he says Tony Snell is up to 225 lbs after hitting the weight room. Someone also said McDermott has gained 10 lbs of muscle weight and up to 225 lbs. That is good news as both those guys lacked strength and will really need it to succeed in the NBA. Especially with Snell since I'm advocating him to be our starter at SF this upcoming season.

Re: Bulls Summer League

Everything yodurk said is pretty spot on.

McDermott still looks crafty and moves wonderfully without the basketball, but he also still looks slow-footed to me and I'm still concerned about his ability to get separation from NBA 3's. He still looks aggressive, which is good... I was a little worried about him being trigger-shy coming out after a year of non-production.

This was my first look at Bobby Portis... can't tell you much about how he looked defensively, but on offense he definitely has nice touch and he looked coordinated from a footwork perspective... I think the threes he hit were probably outliers (but I'm willing to be pleasantly surprised). He plays with intensity and really ran the floor well.

Bairstow may lack skill, but man does that guy compete, and he does always seem to be in the right place, which is a good trait to have as a reserve big.

Re: Bulls Summer League

Summer league game 2 didn't go as well. The whole team couldn't hit a jumpshot. I'm inclined to attribute some of that to being the 2nd game of a back-to-back given they played so hard in the 1st game. Tonight's game will be the tie breaker.

I definitely think McDermott has a solid place in the NBA if for no other reason than his 3-pt shooting ability. But he definitely hasn't found a comfort zone yet. The more I think about it, McDermott isn't one of those guys you can just throw into a system randomly and expect him to succeed. He needs the right system around him to create looks. He isn't a 1 on 1 shot creator, doesn't have the ball skills or athletic ability to do that. But he runs the floor hard and is a pretty good finisher at the hoop. So I don't think he will be a 3-pt specialist only. Will be important for him to play off his teammates well, and it's really important that Hoiberg makes this a priority and finds a way to make it happen.

McDermott is a big reason why I didn't like bringing Brooks back, or at least not as our primary backup PG. We need a 2nd unit PG who can work well with guys like McDermott and Mirotic to create good looks for them. Aaron Brooks isn't that guy, and I'm not sure Rose or Hinrich are that type of guy either.

I agree with this 100% and sadly I think its a bad thing.

Changing the offense around just so McDermott has a chance to score is just not something you do for a guy, unless hes an absolute lights out shooter who can score 25 a night.

I know that Summer League stats are basically meaningless and there is a sense of "so what if you do, damned if you don't" when it comes to Summer League performances. But, I think Doug should be dominating the Summer League. Hes not showing any ability to beat his man one on one. Not saying he needs to be James Harden with the ball in his hands, but he needs to be able to show other teams that he can score on a defender without needing to come off 10 screens.

I hope he develops some post moves or some sort of fadeaway, because if he can't score in the NBA hes useless.

Funny how I was talking about Doug developing a fadeaway and then seeing him actually bust out a decent looking fadeaway jumper a few times against New Jersey the other day. If he can develop that shot, its a HUGE step in the right direction for him.

Re: Bulls Summer League

Doug is playing an interesting style of ball right now. He is not really trying to get open 3-pt looks even though most fans claim that's his bread and butter in the NBA. Granted he hasn't shot the 3-ball well in summer league but he's not really attempting very many either. He is really playing aggressive in trying to get to the rim first and foremost (doing a good job of it I might add...shooting 52% from the field), then supplementing that with some mid-range in the 15-foot area. Really running hard on the break too which is how Hoiberg wants the play with a fast tempo.

I am not sure if his ability to get to the rim & finish will translate but it is definitely working in this setting. Hopefully will see a better 3-ball from him in the next few games and into training camp. I don't think he'll succeed in the NBA without being a 40%+ 3-point shooter with decent volume.

That being said I am glad he gained strength & weight, he definitely needed it and will pay off big time. He is not a big time athlete like Jimmy, nor does he have the size/length of a Dunleavy or Deng, so physically speaking his only advantage will need to be strength/power.

Portis has a chance at redemption this evening against the Raptors. Bebe really did a job on him last time out, I'm intrigued by the matchup.

A guy with his level of athleticism (read: very little) definitely could use a shot like that to allow him to get it off when he needs to.

Re: Bulls Summer League

Bobby Portis comprehensive summer league highlights...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?featur...&v=eFnd4lq-tj0

Observations:
- Good shooter already and will help stretch the floor. Doesn't have consistent 3-pt range yet but can definitely hit it on occasion, and maybe gets there in due time.
- Good body strength at this level of competition. Never seemed to get bullied. Even with stronger NBA guys he is only 20 years old and will get stronger.
- Frequently gets out and runs the floor in transition.
- Good hands, can catch a ball at the rim and finish strong.
- Not a huge leaper in terms of max vertical, but does seem to be a quick leaper who can land and re-gather himself well for 2nd jumps. Seems he will be a decent rebounder at a minimum, and perhaps a very good one; only time will tell.
- Didn't exhibit the ballhandling & passing I thought he was capable of. Turned the ball over more than desired. Doesn't mean it's there, but didn't try it either. He certainly showed it in college so I hope he can develop those skills to NBA levels.

Re: Bulls Summer League

Doug McDermott comprehensive summer league highlights...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?featur...&v=d307F7-PRIM

Observations:
- Seems alot stronger than last year. Not only appearance wise, but he is absorbing hits at the rim much better and finishing through contact.
- Showed really good concentration finishing near the basketball. Alot of his attempts were contested and still made them. Go back and watch his college videos and this is consistent with how he scored in college. Hopefully can translate some of this to NBA level competition.
- Midrange shooting was money. Showed some really nice moves....shot fakes, fall aways, etc.
- Didn't seem aggressive attempting 3-pt shots. Looked to play more of an inside-out game rather than looking for the 3-pointer first. He didn't shoot the 3 well either so I'm thinking the lack of consistent attempts hurt, or maybe his legs were too shot from running the floor and playing inside. Tells me he needs to work on his conditioning still.

I am sold on Doug as a rotation guy this year, but IMO he definitely should NOT be a starter. I think we should start Niko Mirotic (who plays a similar style as Doug, but is bigger and more refined), then let Doug play an instant offense scoring punch role off the bench at SF/PF. I envision 20-24 min per game for Doug this year in this role. This is a good role for him as a 2nd year player on a team trying to contend, and will give him something positive to build from in his 3rd season and beyond. Not yet sure if Doug projects to having starting potential though...if he ever starts it's definitely as a SF but I worry he won't excel as a starter. Definitely seem him being a valuable 6th man though where he can just go in and play basketball rather than worrying about position. Some may argue this would be a failure for someone we grabbed #8 overall in a draft, but I counter that by saying you more often than not end up with non-starting players once you get past the top 7 picks in a draft, and just be happy if Doug ends up a valuable rotation piece with unique scoring ability.

Re: Bulls Summer League

Nice McDermott highlight reel. I hadn't seen the complete summer league version. Thanks.

I thought McDermott looked OK, but offensively, he's most impressive for his wide repertoire of skills rather than his pure shooting. The video supports what many have said - McDermott is a scorer, not merely a shooter.

I've heard many say that McDermott is unathletic. That's just not right. McDermott's a wing and in the NBA, wings as a group are the most athletic players. While McDermott's clearly not among the top-tier in terms of "quick twitch," he has reasonable hops, speed, agility and quickness for the position.

He's not Adam Morrison.
