Marcus Smart - PG - Oklahoma State

He's going to Oklahoma State next season. Mark it down, the kid is a Dwayne Wade clone if I've ever seen one. His motor is nonstop, can play 1-3, and he is FREAKY strong. I mean absurdly strong. Only 6-3 or 6-4.

Saw him match up against Bazz in the summer and he dropped like 30 points and 20 rebounds 5 assists or something. He was the most impressive player in the first half and he went like 1-13 shooting at that time. Clearly he finished the game better. It's amazing how much of a positive impact a player can make while almost shooting his team out of the game.

There was a college basketball coaches survey and he was voted second (behind the top ranked Bazz) as the player they would most want on our team. He's generally ranked around 10 in the recruiting services.

I think he's the best pro prospect in this class. There are highlights of him online, but you need to watch a full game of his to do him justice.

re: Marcus Smart - PG - Oklahoma State

6'4" 200 pound fresh man PG will turn 19 in early March. He is a team player, a leader, and a good defender. Smart can score, but isn't a knock down shooter from deep. He doesn't have the handle of an NBA PG yet, so may need to be a combo guard initially.

Draft Express Profile
DX took an in-depth look at his game and pro prospects in early January.

An interesting article about his family life growing up. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports...ofile/1850729/

The Thunder's beat writer for the local paper interviewed Marcus Smart. Provides some insight into his thoughts on leadership and being a team player. http://blog.newsok.com/thunderrumbli...-marcus-smart/

re: Marcus Smart - PG - Oklahoma State

Quickly becoming my favorite player in the upcoming draft. He has a good looking shooting stroke that should improve, very strong when he takes it to the rim, plays very good man defense along with good rebounding and assists for a shooting guard. Despite being a highly touted freshman and one of the best players on the court, he hustles more than anyone.

Re: Marcus Smart - PG - Oklahoma State

He's a guy who can definitely bring a lot of skills to the table. Can be a threat to score, rebounds well for his position, can be a quality passer, and can make a big impact with his ability to get steals.

Good size for the PG spot, athletic, and young. Could end up being a Top 5 pick.

I guess this is the top 5 pick I really haven't heard anybody talking about. I'm going to be honest and say that I have only seen him play once this year In that game, he was the best player on the floor in a big win against Kansas State. Do any of you have a deeper opinion on him?

He's a good player, but has a little too much AAU in him in my opinion. Still, he's good enough to run a second unit in his rookie year.

Re: Marcus Smart - PG - Oklahoma State

I really don't see him as a strict PG. I think he's a combo guard that will primarily be a SG, but is very competent running an offense.

Re: Marcus Smart - PG - Oklahoma State

Lets say Smart doesn't improve anything. He went back to school to improve on relatively minor weaknesses, and likely would have been a top 3 selection in the draft already. Considering the way the world tends to pick apart guys that stay "a year too long" and kill their draft stock - how far does Marcus Smart fall if he doesn't improve? Deeper draft, same skillset, been picked on by the media for a year... Does he slide out of the top five? ten?

The only way he has a shot at going top 5 is if one or more of the top freshman, Exum, or Mario Hezonja opt not to enter the draft next year which is not as unlikely as some people think it is. Also I would not call his weakness minor if he does not improve his shooting and shot selection guys like Cauley-Stein might end up higher than him on some people's boards. Personally my favorite PG in next year's draft is Jahii Carson.

I don't think that is true. People need to realize that odds are 2-3 of the mega-hype guys simply won't be that good. It happens every year. Smart has proven he can play.

Re: Marcus Smart - PG - Oklahoma State

The only knock on Marcus Smart that I can find is that he doesn't have the same financial savy as other guys who checked out last year and went pro. He could have (possibly) made more money in that weaker draft, shit he could have went #1. Thats it though. I don't extrapolate him staying one more year to equal some sort of flaw in his game. He chose to come back, it wasn't like the NBA didn't want him.

His shot and PG skills needed work and so far this season his shooting percentages are slightly improved, but his shot looks a lot better coming out of his hands. My favorite college player to watch right now. Some teams are going to take some bouncy young guy who is a glorified 6th man in college over Smart and its going to set their franchise back years. Oladipo's play could actually be improving Smarts stock.

Never mind the fact that he's playing another year for (officially) free, and thus delaying his post-rookie contract another year.

Smart is going to go in the top five unless someone drafts Joel Embiid, and I don't see any of the big three as a sixth man. Are you talking about Exum?

Well if you think he goes top five then it might not apply.

I could see Exum and Gordon being taken over Smart, depending on how things shake out. Embiid too. I'd say there's no way he drops out of the top ten unless he gets seriously hurt, but the right (or in this case, wrong) order of GM's at the top of the draft could drop him a few spots.
