Justise Winslow - SF - Duke

Surprisingly, it's Justise Winslow, not Okafor, who's been Duke's best frosh

Re: Justise Winslow - SF - Duke

Winslow is raw, but he has all the tools that you need to play the wings in the NBA. Looks like an excellent defender and a guy that likes to get after the opposing player. The Clippers would certainly be better off playing him than any SF they have on their roster. I wonder if he's done growing, because he's really spurted up in the past year. As a Duke fan I hope he's not one and done, but he might be a lottery pick right now.

Don't know how to embed this vine video, this is awesome. He gets called for a foul, he hits the Stanford player in the shoulder with his knee and in the head with his nutsack while he's jumping over him.

I mentioned Winslow in my Stock Watch last week. But after a couple more performances by Winslow since then, he's worth mentioning again. The freshman is averaging 15.4 PPG and 5.8 RPG. Those numbers aren't particularly gaudy, but watch Winslow up close and you see that he's the heart and soul of this Blue Devils team, much like Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was for Kentucky a few years ago. Winslow has all of those similar intangibles and scouts are almost uniformly in love. If he keeps playing like this all year, he's got a chance to be a top-five pick. The key number for him is to keep shooting around 39 percent from 3-point range. If Winslow can be even a marginal threat from beyond the arc, he could be a special pro.

Winslow is the most versatile of the group, comfortable shooting spot-up 3-pointers, creating off the dribble and challenging anyone at the rim. His cut and dunk off a low-post assist from Okafor versus Fairfield was textbook.
Heralded Duke freshmen embrace old-school fundamentals

Quote:
Winslow has generated a lot of love from scouts the past few weeks with the combination of his toughness and leadership on the court. He appears to be the soul of the Blue Devils team and the comparisons to a young Michael Kidd-Gilchrist appear apt. But not everything is rosy for Winslow right now. Everyone is focusing on his 39 percent shooting from beyond the arc. That's a much better number than scouts were expecting. But his 2-point jump shooting has been awful. Twenty-one percent of his shots have been 2-point jumpers and he's shooting just 15 percent on them. There is major room improvement there.

1. Justise Winslow is special. He was overshadowed by Duke’s package recruiting deal of Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones, but these Blue Devils won’t bow out early in the NCAA tournament because they will be much better on the defensive end. Winslow isn’t a great perimeter shooter, but he makes enough shots -- and does everything else. Mike Krzyzewski told me that the last time he had a wing who could guard like Winslow was Grant Hill. In Duke’s win over Stanford, Winslow finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists, but he was genuinely upset at himself. Why? “I was 4-of-10 from the line," he said. "That can’t happen.”

Duke is the rare young team that neither looks nor plays young

The physically gifted Winslow projects to be a plus NBA defender. He is a capable rebounder with a high motor but possesses a mediocre offensive skill set. Winslow, 18, has been decent from three-point range (10-of-26, 38.5 percent), but his perimeter game is a weakness. This is a prospect who could inch up a few spots or drop five or 10.

Re: Justise Winslow - SF - Duke

Winslow has been really good this month. Also 38% from 3 is pretty solid for a 19 year old with his athletic gifts. Huge fan of his game and think he is the X-Factor if Duke wants to make a big run next month.
