Quote:
This is how San Diego State Steve Fisher can shake off the nightmare that was Arizona’s Stanley Johnson on Wednesday: The knowledge that he probably won’t have to see him again.

“He’s pretty good. Pretty good. He’ll make a pretty good NBA player in about six months,” Fisher said. “I saw him in high school a lot of times. We were early on involved in recruiting him.

“He’s no surprise. He’s a terrific talent that competes like crazy and helps his team win.”

Fisher tried to recruit Johnson out of Mater Dei High School and not only failed but then had to deal with Johnson on the opposing team Wednesday: Johnson had 18 points, nine rebounds and three steals while earning the Maui Invitational MVP award.

What’s scary for UA opponents: Johnson says he’s not yet fully adjusted to the collegiate level.

“There is still a lot of stuff that we do as a team that I’m not physically good at yet,” Johnson said.

But UA coach Sean Miller said Johnson has become “more of a student” in the past month.

“He practices hard, makes mistakes, tries to learn from them,” Miller said. “That spurred him on to, I think, how he played in this tournament. If we would have played this tournament a month ago, he would not have been the MVP.”

Opinions vary on this spot, but pencil in Johnson, a physical specimen who already defends at an NBA level. Johnson’s offensive skills are far less advanced, especially his outside shooting. Scouts believe he can develop into a powerful off-the-dribble threat, though. Talent evaluators cringe at swingmen who are not skilled on the perimeter, so the 18-year-old Johnson will have to prove to be reliable. If he can, he’s a terrific small forward prospect.

Re: Stanley Jonson - SF - Arizona

That was a pretty in-depth breakdown. Once he gets more consistent with his defensive technique he is going to be an All-Defensive team candidate once he gets a couple years under his belt in the league. His jumper is suspect, but I think absolute worst case scenario, barring he stays healthy, he can be a Tony Allen level player.

Anyone think Johnson can be a successful NBA 2 guard? I don't see him listed anywhere as a 2-3, just a 3.

Re: Stanley Jonson - SF - Arizona

Johnson's 3 games prior to tonight (against Colorado/Utah/Stanford):

Colorado: 22 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists. 7-15 from the field, 8-9 from the line.

Utah: 18 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals. 6-12 from the field, 1-2 from 3, 5-7 from the line.

Stanford: 19 points, 7 rebounds. 7-11 from the field, 2-4 from 3, 3-4 from the line.

For averages of 19.7 points and 8 rebounds a game. Doing it on 53% from the field, 33% from 3 and 80% from the line. Dude has been looking good offensively lately too. That's not even counting tonight against Cal where he has gone for 16 and 6 on 5-9 from the field and 6-7 from the line, with six minutes to go. He's probably moving into one of my 5 favorite players in this draft class.

From what I have seen he is purely a 3.
