Pincus: Can the Clippers Compete this year?

Quote:
Since December 17th, the Clippers have won 10 of 14 games. They've beaten the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami HEAT, Phoenix Suns, San Antonio Spurs and Chicago Bulls.
Pincus goes on to suggest Danny Granger + James Posey for Kaman + Butler + Minnesota's pick

I think Granger would be awesome and his contract is reasonable, but Minnesota's pick looks like it could be top 5 if they can't get their **** together!

The Clippers can absolutely play competent basketball the remainder of the season so long as the core guys stay healthy, but making the playoffs is very likely to be out of reach. Going over the proposed trades in that article, Granger would be a nice pickup, but with Indiana currently sitting in eighth in the East they'll be looking to move expirings to pick up immediate help, as opposed to shipping out their best player for relief and picks. Also, for a guy considered "young" in the league, I was surprised by the fact that Granger is turning 28 this season.

So Sterling will go out and get a guy like Granger? Really?

Sure, why not? Name one bad trade the Clippers have made in the past few years.

Granger would be a great pickup. Although this year is out of reach, we can at least be looking to strengthen up the 3 spot. This team is one player away from being the possbile 6th seed next year. Had we played as good as we are now from the get go we would easily be 8th

It'd be a good trade, but they wouldn't be competing. Playoffs yes, but competing is a whole different ball-game, and there's a reason only a select few win championships.

As I said though, it'd be a good trade and makes the team a lot better. Especially as DeAndre Jordan has come into his own recently, and is a better fit for the team than Kaman.

He's occasionally shown a willingness to spend money if there's a reasonable expectation of a winning ballclub. Keep in mind Elton Brand was given a big extension back when, and they made the Baron Davis signing with the intention of bringing Brand back on big money as well to team them up. He's not going to turn into Mark Cuban, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect him to pay Gordon, Griffin, and one other player while being financially judicious otherwise. If anything I expect this to turn out more like Sarver and the Suns, where the team winds up one or two players away but unwilling to spend the money, than the baby Clippers at the start of this decade, where everyone just kind of goes their separate ways after their rookie deals.
