Kaz's job listed as day-to-day
Kaz Matsui has lost the everyday second-base job, though he still may get the majority of the starts. Willie Randolph met with the .213-hitting infielder before yesterday's game, then started Jose Valentin at second base.
Since coming off a season-opening stint on the disabled list, Matsui had started 29 of 34 games. He snapped an 0-for-16 slump with an infield single Saturday. He flied out as a pinch-hitter yesterday, his batting average down 52 points to .213 in two weeks.
Randolph advised Matsui not to chase as many balls out of the strike zone, while Matsui, through an interpreter, described himself as "jumping at the ball."
The manager indicated that promoting Anderson Hernandez (.302 at Triple-A Norfolk through Saturday) or Jeff Keppinger (.284) isn't being considered. "I want to deal with what we have here first," he said. Randolph said he doesn't view Chris Woodward or Valentin as everyday players, so he'll decide the starter day-by-day based on the best matchup.
Xavier Nady - whose average has dropped 24 points, to .270, in two weeks - also sat, as Endy Chavez got his sixth start in right field.
