Lieber's injury won't speed Hamels' return
Lefthander Cole Hamels is scheduled to make a rehab start Thursday in single-A Lakewood.
That's even after the Phillies placed righthander Jon Lieber on the 15-day disabled list last night with a strained left groin. Hamels is eligible to be activated Saturday, which is Lieber's next turn in the rotation, but it appears Hamels is not an option for Saturday's game in Los Angeles.
The Phillies haven't said who will take Lieber's place Saturday.
The Phillies said before Lieber's injury that they hadn't decided where Hamels would slide into the rotation. Hamels and righthander Gavin Floyd both pitch Thursday, so Hamels could have stepped into Floyd's turn next Tuesday in Arizona. He also could have stepped into Ryan Madson's turn June 7 in Arizona. Madson replaced Hamels in the rotation when Hamels went on the disabled list with a strained left shoulder. Floyd has a 6.62 ERA, the second-highest in the National League.
But all that seems moot with Lieber's injury.
