Rockies misstep in a hit charade

San Diego Padres right-hander Chris Young solved the puzzle of the Colorado Rockies at Petco Park on Tuesday night in near-historic fashion.

The former Princeton basketball player was denied the first no-hitter in Padres history when Brad Hawpe led off the eighth inning with a double down the right-field line, but he did claim a 2-0 victory, combining with Trevor Hoffman on a two-hitter.

"He's 6-foot-10, throwing a little closer to you than most guys," said Hawpe, who played against Young in high school in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and was a summer semipro teammate. "He's got that leverage over the top. He makes a pitch up that looks like a good pitch to hit and it's not."

Except for when Hawpe led off the eighth.

"One pitch (to hit), a get-me-over breaking ball," Hawpe said.

Young came within six outs of pitching the first no-hitter in the history of the Padres, who remain among four teams - the Rockies, Tampa Bay Devil Rays and New York Mets are the others - to never have had a pitcher throw a no-hitter.
