Mighty Moose goes distance
As the Yankees were shuttling pitchers in and out of Tuesday night's wild 11-inning win, Mike Mussina went up to Joe Torre with a question.
"How many (innings) tomorrow?" Mussina asked his manager and Torre smiled, knowing his bullpen would be almost completely sapped. "Eight from you and then Gator's going to finish," Torre responded, referring to pitching coach Ron Guidry.
Turned out, Torre didn't even need Gator. Mussina delivered the Yanks' first complete-game victory of the season as the Yankees beat the Tigers, 6-1, before 23,757 at Comerica Park.
The ninth inning featured an unusual scene in which Torre started out of the dugout to remove Mussina once his shutout had been lost only to see the pitcher wave his hand and bark, "Get back in there," making it clear he wasn't going anywhere. Torre quickly retreated, saying later that he "didn't mind at all."
"They shouldn't have scored any runs," Mussina said afterward, "so I wanted to finish it."
