Sheff may return to DL

Gary Sheffield was sent back to New York to see a hand specialist yesterday, and the Yankees do not know when they might get their right fielder back.

As reported in yesterday's Daily News, Sheffield has suffered a new injury to his already-ailing left wrist. After Sheffield told the Bombers that he doesn't believe he could even pinch-hit because of the pain, the Yanks sent Sheffield to see Dr. Charles Melone, who treated him earlier this season.

Sheffield had another MRI done, but results won't be available until this morning. At that time, Joe Torre said, the Yanks will have a better idea if Sheffield will have to go back on the disabled list.

"It makes no sense to have him sit in Detroit," GM Brian Cashman said. "We're trying to get on top of this situation and see what is going on."

Cashman said he's "not in a position" to say whether Sheffield would need to go back on the DL, though Sheffield answered "yeah" when asked late Tuesday if he thought that might happen.

According to Sheffield, the latest injury is more on the outside of his wrist and on the bone. He first felt it while batting on Monday, then felt intense pain while taking warm-up swings before batting practice Tuesday.

"As soon as I picked up the bat to warm up, it felt like my wrist came off," Sheffield said Tuesday. "I don't know what's going on. I felt like (the previous sprain) was getting better, but it's in a different spot now. It's right on the wrist, right on the bone. It's really painful."
