Exclamation Sheff Out Indefinitely

Quote:
Gary Sheffield said late Tuesday night that he believed he was facing another long layoff. Yesterday, his fears were confirmed.

The Yankees announced that Sheffield has a torn ligament and dislocating tendon in his left wrist; Sheffield was placed on the 15-day disabled list even before the diagnosis, and there is no timetable for his recovery.

"It's a serious injury," GM Brian Cashman said. "He's obviously going to be down past the 15 days on the DL, but what the time frame past that is remains to be seen."

Sheffield's lawyer, Rufus Williams, said surgery is not "the first answer" but that it could be considered in the future if Sheffield doesn't respond to initial treatments.

Sheffield would like to avoid surgery because it would likely require a much longer layoff, quite possibly ending his season. Cashman said Sheffield will be monitored over an undetermined period - likely a week or two - to see if he's responding to conservative treatment; if he doesn't, surgery would be the next step.

Since it's already June, the Yankees do not want to wait too long to make the decision.

"You can't treat something conservatively forever," Cashman said.
