Bombers miss sweep and Mo
In the back corner of the visitors' clubhouse last night, Mike Myers slipped Mariano Rivera's jacket over the closer's shoulders. He then grabbed Rivera's suitcase and rolled it toward the door for him. Rivera followed, several steps behind, walking gingerly with a hand on his hip as though he'd aged 40 years overnight.
A few feet away, Kyle Farnsworth was explaining what had happened in the ninth inning. The short version? Farnsworth coughed up a one-run lead and the Yankees suffered a discouraging 7-6 loss to the Tigers at Comerica Park, snapping their five-game winning streak and denying them a four-game sweep of baseball's best team.
In a season that has been filled with grisly injuries and plenty of pain, this scene may have been the most jarring of all: Life without Rivera. It wasn't pretty.
