Series thread: Jays at Orioles, June 5-8

Toronto (31-24) at Baltimore (26-31)

It's been a full team effort for the Jays lately and they'll need to win this series to keep pace in the AL east.

TV: RSN, CSN

Monday, June 5 Oriole Park at Camden Yards | 7:05 PM ET
TOR Ted Lilly, LHP (5-5, 4.50) @ BAL Daniel Cabrera, RHP (2-2, 5.23)

Scouting Report:
Lilly allowed five runs on five hits in four innings in his last outing. The left-hander struggled with his control, as evidenced by his four walks, one hit batsman and a wild pitch that allowed a runner to score. Lilly is 2-0 in two starts against Baltimore this season with a 2.84 ERA. The Orioles' average against the Toronto lefty this season is only .229.

The Orioles will activate Cabrera from the disabled list to make this start, bumping the previously scheduled starter, Bruce Chen, back a few days. Cabrera has spent more than two weeks on the DL with shoulder inflammation, but he's still tied for the American League lead in most walks allowed (39 -- with Tampa Bay's Seth McClung).

Tuesday, June 6 Oriole Park at Camden Yards | 7:05 PM ET
TOR Ty Taubenheim, RHP (0-2, 6.75) @ BAL Erik Bedard, LHP (5-5, 5.97)

Scouting Report:
Taubenheim, a 23-year-old right-hander, has made two starts and two relief appearances since being called up to the Majors for the first time last month. He lost both starts, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings at Colorado and five runs on six hits in 2 1/3 innings against the White Sox.

Bedard started the season on a 4-1 clip and has lost four of his last five decisions. He's allowed a total of 18 earned runs in his last three starts and has pitched five innings or less in six of his last seven starts. Bedard went 1-3 with a 7.85 mark in May and lasted just three innings in his first June start, so he should be fresh.

Wednesday, June 7 Oriole Park at Camden Yards| 7:05 PM ET

TOR Casey Janssen, RHP (4-3, 3.26) @ BAL Kris Benson, RHP (6-4, 4.77)

Scouting Report:
Casey Janssen makes his ninth start for the Jays and will try to continue his torrid pace -- the right-hander was 3-1 with a 2.31 ERA in five starts since beginning the season 0-2. He picked up another win Friday at Tampa Bay, allowing just two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. Two of his three losses this season -- his first two starts -- have come against Baltimore.

Benson is Baltimore's only starter with an ERA under 5.00, and he's the closest thing the Orioles have to an ace. He hasn't won in two weeks, though. Benson pitched six strong innings against New York in his last start, with two homers serving as the only offense.

Thursday, June 8 Oriole Park at Camden Yards | 7:05 PM ET

TOR Roy Halladay, RHP (7-1, 2.81) @ BAL Bruce Chen, LHP (0-5, 7.71)

Scouting Report:
Completing his fourth eight-plus-inning outing in his last start, Halladay allowed just two runs on five hits at Tampa Bay for his team-high seventh win. Halladay had a standout May, going 3-0 in six starts with a 2.89 ERA. He threw two complete games (against the Rays and Angels), and went 8 2/3 in another outing (Rays), and allowed three or less runs in four of the six starts. He's got more career wins against Baltimore than against any other team, with an 11-4 all-time record and 2.97 ERA.

Chen will likely step back into the rotation in this spot, but it's possible the Orioles will give rookie Adam Loewen another start. Chen got bumped from the rotation by Daniel Cabrera's return to the rotation, and manager Sam Perlozzo said Chen won't miss more than a couple days. The southpaw has yet to win this season.

Well we have Halladay pitching the last game of the series so if we win the first 3 games we can finnally complete a sweep?

No, it only means Halladay will loose, lol.

Jays are down a couple early, 2-0 with bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the second. Lilly looks a little rusty or something.

Luis Figueroa is playing second today with Hill at shortstop.

^ Make that 3-0 O's. Ramon Hernandez with double to score Tejada.

Wow Daniel Cabrera of the O's is just cruising along. The dude already has 6 strikeouts.
Not good for the Jays and their offense.

Re: Series thread: Jays at Orioles, June 5-8

We pulled out a nice win today. Alex Rios with some clutch hitting after the Orioles tied it. We needed this win to keep in tact with the Yankees and the Red Sox.

Re: Series thread: Jays at Orioles, June 5-8

Wow, how many times did we get screwed over with bad calls yesterday. Johnson at home, Mollina at 1st, Hill striking out. Good thing we still came through and won. Hopefully we can do the same tonight.

Re: Series thread: Jays at Orioles, June 5-8

By the way, I'm really liking the Fan 590's Post Game show after each game, where they have people calling in and what not. Yes, they do the same for the Raptors but I think for the Jays they are a lot more critical of players and even the individuals who are calling. I find that quite often, in the Raptors post game shows they shy away from that too much.

Thank you

It scares me to think what we would be in right now if we had not gotten BJ Ryan. Our bullpen still needs some strengthening but I'm sure we will address that soon enough. I just hope when Burnett comes back that he will stay healthy and then we can finally shift into higher gear and soar our way into the playoffs.

Thumbs up Re: Series thread: Jays at Orioles, June 5-8

Yeah, I think about what would happen without Ryan on the Jays too and it is ****ing scary! We'd easily have at least six less win and probably less than that.

Janessen was impressive again last night, he pitched six innings allowing one run on six hits, with five strikeouts and zero walks...made me wonder, Josh who? Janessen has four more wins than Towers.

I agree with MonkeyBallz and have been saying since the second week of the season the Jays would need to get another solid relief pitcher, although I haven't heard much lately about that.

Hill continued to turn it around last night and it looks like those hard hit balls he keeps hitting may be finally landing on some grass. Vern was, of course amazing, hitting four for five and just looking generally like the best center fielder in the majors.

Scoring Summary

Top 2nd: Toronto
- S. Hillenbrand scored, B. Molina to third, E. Alfonzo to second on wild pitch
Top 3rd: Toronto
- L. Overbay grounded out to first, V. Wells scored
Bot 3rd: Baltimore
- B. Roberts hit sacrifice fly to left, B. Fahey scored
Top 7th: Toronto
- F. Catalanotto singled to right, E. Alfonzo scored, A. Rios to third
- T. Glaus grounded into fielder's choice, A. Rios scored, R. Johnson out at second
Bot 7th: Baltimore
- M. Tejada singled to center, B. Roberts scored, M. Mora to second
- K. Millar walked, M. Mora scored, M. Tejada to third, R. Hernandez to second
Top 9th: Toronto
- V. Wells ground rule double to deep right, R. Johnson scored

Re: Series thread: Jays at Orioles, June 5-8

With Halladay on the mound tonight, let's go for the 5th consecutive series win! If we continue to win each andd every series, we can easily win 90+ games this year and make a run for the AL East title or the wildcard...
