Sore Thumb Keeps Jeter Out Of Lineup
No worries Jeter, Giambi and company will carry us.
You can't throw a palm ball to first base, so Derek Jeter was out of the lineup Monday night.
"He had trouble throwing," manager Joe Torre said, "so I didn't have to make a decision."
Jeter took a pitch off his right thumb Sunday in Baltimore and still has swelling at the knuckle. Torre put Miguel Cairo at shortstop in his lineup, but planned to watch Jeter closely during practice. When Jeter couldn't grip the ball and throw it accurately, he went back to the trainer's room without trying to hit.
Torre is not counting on Jeter for a few days.
"I wasn't capable of playing," Jeter said. "It's a gripping issue. I couldn't grip the ball."
Jeter is having ice and heat treatment to reduce swelling and restore range of motion.
"He couldn't throw the ball [a few feet] tonight," Torre said. "It's hard to imagine it's going to be much better tomorrow."
