Nationals sign Jayson Werth to 7-yr/$126M deal

Um, what?

Quote:
Right fielder Jayson Werth has agreed to a $126 million, seven-year contract with the Washington Nationals.

The first deal of the winter meetings was announced Sunday while Major League Baseball was still setting up the news conference room, and it was a big one.

Werth, who hit .296 with 27 homers last season with the Philadelphia Phillies, would help the Nationals replace Adam Dunn's power. Dunn signed with the Chicago White Sox on Friday.

I'm sure that Carl Crawford and his agent are excited about this news...Wow I had no idea that there was this type of market for Werth. If he gets this then what is Crawford worth?

Huh? Red Sox never made an offer - and if they did, nothing as crazy as this. They were pulling off the deal for Gonzalez and would most likely go after Crawford instead.

Oh, I was under the impression that the Red Sox had made an offer. My mistake.

Re: Nationals sign Jayson Werth to 7-yr/$126M deal

They couldnt resign Adam Dunn a Fan Favorite and pretty much only reason beside Strasburg people went to the see the Nationals this season...But they give 31 y/o Jayson Werth who has never had a 100rbi season, and have never hit over 300 a f'n 126mil dollar deal? This might go down as one of the worse contract in mlb history and might just ruin the Nationals future

But on the other hand Crawford agents have got to be dancing around their offices right now

Re: Nationals sign Jayson Werth to 7-yr/$126M deal

Well they have been trying to lure somebody to play for them for a while now. I believe they offered Mark Texiera even more than the Yankees a couple years ago (I think it was close to $200 million, but not 100% sure)

But this is a bad signing, really bad. There's no way that anybody else even offered close to $126 million and if that's what him and his agent were after, no wonder Philly let him go.

Re: Nationals sign Jayson Werth to 7-yr/$126M deal

Boston was talking to Werth, but they hadn't got as far as an offer yet as they were trying to finish up Gonzalez's extension and see where that left 2011's payroll. The good news for Bloston, however, is that with Werth off the market, they're going to end up with Detroit's first round pick next year. Boston moves up to #15 at the least, assuming they sign a type A guy. If not then they pick 15 & 21.

Only Werth & Crawford were rated higher than Victor Martinez by Elias (as position players), meaning that if Detroit signed one of them then their #1 would go to either Philly or Tampa. I guess if Detroit signed Carl Crawford or Cliff Lee then Boston would be out of luck, I just can't see either happening. And with Werth's contract the Yankees now have to choose between Cliffly & Carl Crawford because they won't be able to sign both to $20 million+ deals.

Re: Nationals sign Jayson Werth to 7-yr/$126M deal

Lee is probably going to get 150 million over six years or something more ridiculous....Unless he decides that he doesn't want to play for in the Northeast. I guess the Rangers are fairly close to his home. I guess Crawford will get at least 20 million per year too. He's the only real big fish on the market and that means that the usual suspects are going to be really hot for him.

Hell I guess Lee could get something close to 30 million per year if you think about how ridiculous this Werth deal is and how badly the Yankees want him.

Of the 4 100 million dollar men in DC only Ovechkin's production comes close to being worth it.
