What Could've Been in Washington

Interesting read about the Grienke rumors, and about what could have been in Montreal/DC. It's a good example of what happens when you mortgage the future to trade for an aging All-Star.

Of course these players could have turned out differently playing for the Expos/Nationals, but it's a good read nonetheless.

I definitely like the fact that the Nats are trying to develop their farm system. The Werth signing was bad, one of the worst in history actually, but if he can be a veteran leader for these young guys then it could work out OK down the road. Teams have shown that they can have success with developing talent for themselves, even in today's MLB (The Rays from 08-10, Marlins in 03, Rockies a few years ago).

People always bring this trade up.. it was a freak occurance similar to winning the lottery.. most of the deals the team trading the stud generally is lucky to get 1 or 2 everyday players out of the deal. May as well bring up the Brewers trading Michael Brantley, Matt Laporta and Zach Jackson for a run with CC.. think anybody in Milwaukee is regretting that deal?

Yeah, you really need to search hard to find those sorts of deals. Normally those farm system deals are more akin to Tony Armas Jr. & Carl Pavano for Pedro Martinez. Or whatever boatload of crap Boston gave up to get Curt Schilling back (given that they'd traded him to Baltimore 15 years before).
