Cardinals open talks with Pujols

Cardinals open talks with Pujols

The Cardinals have wasted little time addressing their most pressing New Year's resolution: tying up Albert Pujols. Negotiations between the club and Pujols' agent, Dan Lozano, resumed this week and have taken on a "positive" tone, according to several sources familiar with the process.

Those sources wish to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of discussions and a December agreement between general manager John Mozeliak and Lozano to keep talks confidential.

This much is known: the Cardinals are attaching significantly more urgency to negotiating a potential record extension with Pujols prior to his arrival at spring training than last February.

The three-time NL MVP has stated he will not negotiate once he reports to Jupiter, Fla., to begin his 12th season with the organization. The Cardinals reopened their front offices on Tuesday; Pujols likewise has returned to St. Louis after a flurry of travel.

Something from earlier today..

Quote:
Lance Berkman isn't on the inside of the St. Louis Cardinals' contract negotiations with megastar first baseman Albert Pujols, but he can't envision the two parties not reaching an agreement.

"I would be really surprised if they're not able to work something out," said Berkman, who signed a one-year, $8 million free-agent deal with the Cardinals in December and will play right field. "Clearly, you're talking about one of the best players that's ever put a uniform on for any team. Certainly, he and St. Louis have been a great match over the years.

"It would be shocking for me to see that end any other way than him continuing his career and eventually finishing up as a Cardinal. I think something will get done."

With the Cards Winter Warmup I'd think they will try their best to get this settled by the 16th or its gonna make for an "uneasy" situation when that goes on with questions galore.

Re: Cardinals open talks with Pujols

Key Words in this article.

- Albert: "Do you want to bring all that into the clubhouse all year, like you guys have been doing the last couple of years? No. I respect my teammates more than this contract. That's why you have to set some deadline on this, and that's it."

"If the Cardinals want to say something in the paper and talk about our business, then they can say something. Myself I think I'm more professional than that. If we want to get something done, we'll get it done and everybody's going to know when we get it done."

- DeWitt: "He's an iconic player because he's such a great player. He's proven year in and year out that he's one of the greatest players to play the game. He's never had a bad year and has lifetime totals that are incredible. You can't go out and find an Albert Pujols." "We want him to be with us. Until something happens one way or another, there's not a lot to say beyond that."

"If we don't sign him in the next four weeks, that doesn't mean he's not going to be a Cardinal. We'd love to sign him tomorrow, or whenever."

- LaRussa: "I'm not going to say a word. Let them work it out."

- Berkman: "Obviously it's something the organization probably doesn't want hanging for the whole season. Clearly you're talking about the best player in baseball, probably the best hitter in the history of baseball. I'm not sure how you go about taming that tiger."

Re: Cardinals open talks with Pujols

Well, he rejected their last offer on the self-imposed deadline and he and his agent came out saying they won't talk about it now til end of season.

Unless, Cards give him that 10-yr/$300M deal, he's most likely gone. Someone will give it to him.

He'll walk if the Cards don't make a serious run this year.
