Your All Time Favorite Player?

I am a die hard Tigers fan to the core, but my all time favorite player has to be Mickey Mantle. I am a big time MLB history buff and if I could go back in time to watch baseball for any period of time it would be from 1951-1968. That was the best time in baseball IMHO, I like to refer to it as the "Golden Age of Baseball". No steroids and the best players of all time came out of it.

The reason why I like Mickey Mantle is he was the face of those two decades. The most popular player on the Yankees. The girls wanted him the guys wanted to be him. He could of been so much more if he was not plagued with injuries his whole career. He had a career .298 batter, 3 Time MVP, won the Triple Crown in 1955, 16 Time All Star, won a Gold Glove and is a 7 time World Series Champion. Three of them coming in his first three years of being a player. Sure I never watched a live game of him playing, but I have great respect of the MLB past and the players. That is why he is my favorite player.

Who's yours?

Re: Your All Time Favorite Player?

I don't think anyone should pick a favorite player from an era they never lived through, in any sport. All you know about that player is from 2nd hand reports, MLB.com, and wikipedia. Seems pretentious to me.

Ichiro. Griffey is undoubtedly the most popular player here, but I didn't live here until 2000. I know of Jr's greatness, but I won't say he's my guy since I never saw him play.

Yeah, Robin Yount for me. Not even close. Molitor bolted to the hated Blue Jays in 1993, after a great Brewers season where I think we could have won the World Series if there were 3 divisions or a Wildcard.

Historically, I've always been impressed by the stats and anecdotes of Rogers Hornsby.

Re: Your All Time Favorite Player?

Frank Thomas. I didnt even get to watch him play that much growing up, but I was a huge baseball card collector and I always got so excited getting cards of him in packs and seeing what kind of stats he had accumulated. Griffey was also huge on my list because of my location, he was a close second. When I was young I enjoyed baseball but I really dont like it much now.... Although I have to admit I watch probably 100 or so of the mariners games every season.

Re: Your All Time Favorite Player?

No doubt about it for me... he made his debut when I was eight and really just starting to follow baseball closely:

.301 career batting average (dragged down by some low average years late in his career)
521 Home Runs
1704 RBI
1494 Runs scored
1667 Walks
2 time AL MVP... and should have a 3rd in 2000 when a 'roided up Jason Giambi (admitted he was on the juice that year) beat him out... Thomas hit .328 with 43 home runs and 143 RBI that year.

Re: Your All Time Favorite Player?

My favorite was probably Ralph Garr, whom most of you would have no clue who he was. I liked him for a weird reason though. Garr was probably the best bad ball hitter I ever saw. The guy would swing at pitches two feet out of the zone and rifle them into the outfield. It was amazing and I could never figure out how he did it. He would literally get hits off balls that were about to hit him in the ankles.

I was 9 at the time. Didn't understand the intricacies, all I knew was that in 93 he was on the Blue Jays and I didn't like that.

I always liked Robin Yount, being only 19 never getting to watch him I still have saw videos of him and have seen his stats. Guy was a tank!!! I as well always liked Frank Thomas, I always felt bad for the guy because of all the different teams he played for. I always thought he should of stayed a White Sox his whole career.

Re: Your All Time Favorite Player?

Might sound odd. But growing up in early to late 90's, I was a huge Juan Gonzalez fan. Always would watch him when Rangers were on ESPN or I'd check the box scores each day to see if he hit another HR. This was when he just started to put up 40 HR seasons in 1992. Then he became kinda just fell off early 2000's and steroid rumors/talk came out eventually with Canseco's book. He put up some good numbers career in 17 seasons with some down ones towards the end - but better than I remember (.295 batting avg, 439 HRs, 1404 RBIs, 1061 runs, and 2-time MVP). Just remembered him having monster seasons though.

I also was a big Manny Ramirez fan when he first debuted with the Indians, which led me to being a Red Sox fan when he signed. Then all steroid stuff came out about him of course. Ugh.

Re: Your All Time Favorite Player?

reflecting back, rickey henderson was awesome to watch when he got on base as well. And of course cal ripken... and even though it was later in his career nolan ryan. God, no wonder I hate baseball now, I have like no attachment to any of the players whereas when I was a kid there was so many that were fun to watch.

Re: Your All Time Favorite Player?

Griffey was my favorite by far. He had the sweetest swing and was always making crazy catches over the fence in center field. Plus, he always had the coolest cleats on. Looking back, those Mariner teams were awesome. Its a shame they never won it all. Griff, Edgar Martinez, Jay Buhner, Randy Johnson, and a even had a young A Rod.
