Sources: Epstein, Cubs agree

Quote:
Theo Epstein and the Chicago Cubs have agreed to a five-year, nearly $20 million deal for him to join the team, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney Wednesday.

The $20 million includes the Cubs picking up the conclusion bonus in Epstein's Red Sox deal, sources said.

Epstein has been to Chicago on two separate occasions to meet with Cubs officials, sources said. He was Red Sox general manager for nine seasons and had one year remaining on his current deal in Boston.

According to sources, Major League Baseball expressed great concern over the compensation package because they do not want this deal to affect how other teams compete in the market for front-office personnel.

A source with knowledge of the talks told ESPN's Karl Ravech Tuesday that the compensation would involve prospects and/or cash, but no major league players would be part of the deal, following traditional precedent.

WEEI, which first reported an agreement between Epstein and the Cubs, said that a title has not yet been agreed upon, but it has been assumed that he will get a higher title than what he had on the Red Sox, executive vice president/general manager.

Oh god.

Cubs fans have been so quiet the past few years, too.

Now we're going to have to endure more "wait till next year" nonsense and entitlement.

Theo Epstein is just more false hope.

At least Marc Cuban wasn't able to acquire them.

There is absolutely no way you can hate on Cubs fans. We have suffered enough. Do not take away this momentary feeling of hope with your misplaced cynicism.

Re: Sources: Epstein, Cubs agree

I wonder if Epstein was not on his way out in Boston, or just tired of the pressure there. Aside from Castro the Cubs have pretty much nothing of real value on their major league roster and they say that their farm system is in bad shape as well. Not so sure that the new owners are ready to try to buy a roster either. Does not really work when you are starting from zero. You can add a couple of key guys, but not an entire team of free agents.

Re: Sources: Epstein, Cubs agree

Epstein's motivation is pretty straightforward, if the Cubs win a world series he becomes the most famous GM in MLB history and gets his plaque in Cooperstown warmed up. And, obviously, there's a lot less pressure in Chicago than Boston. Though Theo's generated his own pressure by committing more than $350 million to Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Horseface.

I've said it before that I like most of the Cubs fans on this site. They're good people.

But generally speaking, Cubs fans are unbearable. They don't act as entitled as Yankees or Red Sox fans, but they're awfully close, and honestly, for how poor their franchise is, they shouldn't even be near that level of entitlement.

The most annoying thing to me, is the "lovable losers" persona that the fans seem to embrace.

For one, the team is filled with losers, but they're certainly not lovable. The team is filled with egos and has been for the past few years. Soriano, Zombrano, Aramis. There's nothing lovable about those guys.

And I say that as a White Sox fan, who watches his team get second tier acquisitions (through Free Agency or trades) all the time who are almost always players past their prime (Griffey, Peavy, Thome, Dunn). Even though our acquisitions might not always work out for us (Griffey, Peavy, Dunn, Rios), they're all classy guys who the fans have embraced (minus Dunn) despite their shortcomings with the team. I feel like we're a far more "lovable" squad, but we don't feel like we need to toot our horns about it.

I have no sympathy for Cubs fans. I'm a White Sox fan. Yeah, we won a World Series this past decade, but if you look at the lineup that year, we were hardly expected to win anything and that team certainly took everybody by surprise.

If the Cubs are underdogs, then we're under-underdogs.

Sorry for the rant. I have issues with your fanbase, but like I said, I like all the Cubs fans on here.

Chicago gets what it deserves. Corruption at all levels. Now one of the biggest pieces of garbage on the planet with Theo Epstein. He and rahm emanuel will make a nice pair of scumbags.
