The Hot Stove Thread

Romour has it that the Marlins made Pujols a 9/225 offer.

Re: The Hot Stove Thread

The initial offer to Reyes by the Marlins is said to be 6 years for $90 million, but I'm sure they're willing to move up on that. They're also courting Mark Buehrle, CJ Wilson and Ryan Madson among others.

Braves have been desperately shopping Jair Jurrjens around, but nobody is biting. They waited too long to get anything good. Should've done it around the all-star game.

Angels add Iannetta, deal Chatwood

ANAHEIM -- Moving to shore up their catching from the offensive side, the Angels on Wednesday acquired Chris Iannetta from the Rockies in exchange for pitcher Tyler Chatwood.

It is the first move of consequence by the new Angels front office headed by general manager Jerry Dipoto.

Iannetta, 28, was a .235 hitter in six seasons in Colorado. He is coming off a 2011 campaign in which he batted .238 with 14 homers and 55 RBIs.

The number that no doubt impressed the Angels most is his .357 on-base percentage in 458 Major League games. Iannetta owns a .430 slugging mark with a high of 18 home runs in 2008.

Chatwood, a native Southern Californian who attended high school in Redlands, was the team's top Draft pick in 2008. He rose swiftly through the farm system with a mid-90s fastball and a big curveball, reaching the Majors in 2011 at 21 -- he'll be 22 in two weeks.

Decent deal, Chatwood was good but never front of the rotation material. This just tells me the Angels FO is confident they will add another pitcher and anything is an upgrade over Mathis offensively.

Re: The Hot Stove Thread

Marlins get Heath Bell, rumored to be 3 years/$27 million with a vesting option for a fourth year. That's a lot of money for a closer, especially a 34 year old closer whose K/9 inning dropped drastically last year. To me, it's a bad move unless they get a couple more big free agents and are playoff contenders. If they just get Bell and some minor pieces, I don't like it. If they get Bell, Jose Reyes and either CJ Wilson or Mark Buehrle I think it's worth the risk.

Re: The Hot Stove Thread

Well, I said the same thing when they traded for Ugueth Urbina in 2003. They gave up Adrian Gonzalez for a few months of Urbina, but at the same time they wouldn't have won the World Series without him. Not say winning the World Series instantly makes every move you've made a good move, but if you're going to give up your best prospect to rent a closer for half a season you better be all in. Same thing applies here, if you're going to shell out $27 million to a 34-year-old closer you better be planning on contending for the next few years. In the Marlins case, that means you need to add more firepower to the lineup and at least one starting pitcher (Wilson or Buehrle) before you can think about contending.

The Angels getting rid of Mathis is the happiest day of my life.

Really this trade is the MLB equivalent of an exchange of bodily fluids, only the bodily fluids in this case are diarrhea and vomit.

Re: The Hot Stove Thread

Marlins apparently has a deal with Jose Reyes. Reported 6 years for 106 mil.

That's a lot of money invested in an injury prone player. I'm hoping my Jays can come in and snatch up Hanley Ramirez. A young(somewhat) talented player with attitude problem is the type of player AA has been acquiring lately.

Re: The Hot Stove Thread

I was hoping that Boston could do the same thing, only move Hanley to third and let Youkilis take over as the DH. Anyway, rumours are growing that Boston is going to put in an aggressive bid on Japanese phenom Yu Darvish. Also, rumours that a few NL teams have kicked the tires on Carl Crawford, and are willing to trade for him if Boston agrees to pay $5-$6 million of his salary. (Personally I think that the Cubs and Red Sox should settle the compensation issue with a Crawford for Garza trade )

Re: The Hot Stove Thread

Scott Boras' mouthpiece is spreading rumours that Albert Pujols has no proof that he's 31. Apparently someone forgot to tell them that he migrated to the US in his teens and, far from being a bonus baby, was an eighth round pick out of a community college. It's probably just a coincidence that Boras represents Prince Fielder...
