I guess it makes it a little bit better but still 121mil for a guy that never pitched in the MLB when you could get both Buerhle and Wilson for that much is just dumb

Re: Rangers win rights to Darvish with $51.7M bid

Posting fee is returned to the bidding team if no deal is reached.

Throwing money away is never good, but nothing's surefire. If you've got a chance at somebody that could be great, you go for it. The thought that you "could get" somebody for the same amount of money is a bit silly given of course, players' preferences in who they'd like to play for and with/where they'd like to play. Pitchers are always a dicey market anyhow. If the team can afford it, there's no reason not to gamble.

Can Blue Jays really afford to spend 121mil on a chance that the guy could be great?

Dice-K, Igawa, Arabu where all considered front of the rotation starters also
Extensive scouting have been done on Darvish and most scouts consider him to be at least a #2. Nothing is certain but this isn't exactly a wild guess.

People want to make fun of the Dice-K signing but the fact is Boston didn't really lose that much money over him after you consider all the advertising money he brought over. He didn't exactly pan out but like I said these guys bring additional revenue to the team.

exactly for that 121mil they could have got CJ Wilson and Mark Buerhle...That is why im happy the Yankees only offered 20mil for the fee to just talk to him
This is just a dumb way to look at things. CJ Wilson had like 8 teams all offering similar or more money and he chose to go to LA. Buerhle also had multiple offers. To acquire both of them it takes much more than just 121 mil. To just ignore the uncertainty and look solely at the number figure just doesn't make sense here.

The Jays are owned by Rogers Communications which also owns the Raptors and the Maple Leafs. I'm sure they can afford it. That's why I said that it's disappointing that they chose not to.

I don't think you understand what I'm talking about. In order to compete you need front rotation starters and they are difficult to acquire. When you have the opportunity to acquire one you should do it especially when you need it. The way you are putting it makes it sound like these starters grow on trees and all you have to do is pay to get them. In reality it's difficult to acquire these guys even if you have the money.

True but if it prevents your team from making moves in the future, you'd care. Many teams are reluctant to shell out additional money after they've made a mistake on a big name.

You end up paying for it in Tickets and Merchandise.

Plus, if you actually have an interest in a team, you should hope they don't make stupid signings

I don't care a bit about the money. I just think this entire system is retarded and has no benefit to anyone in MLB, so if I were in the offices of MLB I would want to find something that was more to the advantage of MLB as a whole.

I just want to see my A's do well. I'm sick of watching the stinking Giant games and pretending I have an interest in the outcomes because I know my team sucks balls.

The A's robbed the Nationals in that Gio Gonzalez trade. You just have to love NL GMs. Only a couple of them actually knows what they're doing.
