I can't believe we live in a country where we commit 110 million dollars to a person in which we have no idea how well they stake up to competing talent.

Part of the reason I barely care about baseball anymore. Outside of a few select teams, it's a shitshow.

"WE" didn't commit to anything, the Texas Ranger ownership did. Isn't it great we live in a country that allows people to invest and take risks as they wish.

Boston turned a profit on DiceK, which is probably why Texas had no fear of making the commitment to another Japanese star. With the added bonus that this one hasn't already thrown 72,368 innings worth of pitches.

Which makes the sample size smaller, not saying he won't be successful. But if a player was the greatest player in the history of the mexican league, you wouldn't see a team invest 100 million right off the bat.

The process itself seems crazy to me.

Re: Rangers win rights to Darvish with $51.7M bid

I think that at some point someone in Japan managed to get himself out of his contract and that is what this stuff is supposed to prevent. I believe Soriano got into a legal dispute with his team and became a free agent. If you're not under contract this stuff does not apply. Of course the whole thing seems to have a lot more benefit to the Japanese team than it does MLB and it seems to me that Selig should tell them we'd rather not play this game.

I'm not arguing the second part. But there isn't really a small sample size worry with Darvish. He doesn't have one of those overtorqued Japanese deliveries and doesn't regularly throw 200 pitch outings. So Texas has the security that Whirling Darvish isn't coming over here with a frayed elbow that's going to give out in the near future. Boston got three good/decent years out DiceK before the elbow injuries made him ineffective, Texas should get more than that out of Darvish. And the marketing opportunities that open up in Japan won't hurt.

Continuing your sentence and I am quoting """"where we commit 110 million dollars to a person in which we have no idea how well they stake up to competing talent."""""

Again, ""we"" did not commit anything, The Texas Ranger organization did.

I can't believe we live in a country where we (can) commit 110 million dollars to a person in which we have no idea how well they stake up to competing talent.

Happy? I ****ing understand who is paying the contract. And it has nothing to do with my statement as a generalization.

I can't believe we live in a WIN METHOD country where we (can) commit 110 million dollars to a person in which we have no idea how well they stake up to competing talent.

Thank God there are businesses and people who can commit any amount of dollars they wish to pursue their goals and dreams.

Commit any amount of dollars they wish to pursue their selfish endeavors when there are starving children in the world.

Great.

Re: Rangers win rights to Darvish with $51.7M bid

Update: First time facing a team (8 games) Darvish is 6-1 with a ~2.4ERA, 26BB. Second time facing a team (4 starts) he is 1-3 with ~6.5 with 18BB
