Andruw Jones - Hall of Fame?

So, I saw today that the Yankees were going to bring back Andruw Jones for another year. Am I the only one here that, maybe half a decade ago... six years or so... felt like Andruw Jones was a surefire Hall of Famer? At age 28, was I the only one that thought - right there is someone that will be in the Hall of Fame. But right now, as he's hung on with four teams in the last four years. As he's hit only 52 homers of the past 4 years, and he's presently at 420... Looking less unlikely by the year to reach 500 homers. Never was a prolific base-stealer, with only 152, despite the solid speed he had early in his career. And only a career .250s hitter with under 2000 hits. For a time his glove+power combo from the CF spot made him look like he could be a hall of famer to me... but he faded so very fast.

Re: Andruw Jones - Hall of Fame?

He was a monster with the Braves, especially defensively. However he was really never much more than a guy who could really hit the fastball, and then once he left the ATL he stopped catching up to the heat. When he left the Braves it looked like he could have ended up with 600 home runs, but instead he fell off the map. I have heard people say that the most important thing is to scout your own players and when the Braves let him leave it was probably one of the best moves ever. They probably knew things that the rest of us didn't. I believe there was some crap about him frequenting a strip club where the dancers did more than dance.

Re: Andruw Jones - Hall of Fame?

I was having a debate last season with a friend if he'll get his number in the outfield of Turner Field. Even that doesn't feel like a done deal though they should.

I just remember that one year where he had 50 HR's and ATL's other best players were hurt and he carried that team to the playoffs. Should have got an MVP award that year.

I think it's almost certain that he took PEDs back in the days.

I sure thought he was. I mean, the guy hit a HR at 19 in the World Series didn't he?

I think most people consider him to be much older than his reported age (34).

Re: Andruw Jones - Hall of Fame?

I'd like to know why Ozzie Smith is considered a solid Hall of Famer and Andruw Jones doesn't deserve to get in.

Ozzie Smith was the best defensive player possibly in the history of the game, and he was a personality that the league always heavily promoted, his offense was certainly hof lacking but him getting in the hof was a no brainer.. a guy like andruw jonesjust never had mlb really promote him so he is not onsidered a star in the eyes of many people even if his power numbers were great and his defense was elite

Re: Andruw Jones - Hall of Fame?

Ozzie did his thing a lot longer and played in an era where defense was more valuable. No one was jacking 60 odd homers out of Busch stadium back then. You were a power hitter if you hit 25 or 30 home runs. Of course he had the signature moment in the Series, but that was just the cherry on top. Jones had the HOF dead in his sights and would have made it pretty easy if he had just stayed relevant, and probably if he had not gotten fat. If he had just kept on collecting gold gloves that might have been enough. If he had gotten close to 500 and people were viewing him as one of the best defensive centerfielders ever he'd have a great chance.

Is Omar Vizquel a hall of famer, or does he not get in because of the era?

Re: Andruw Jones - Hall of Fame?

How long was Vizquel the best defensive shortstop in MLB? I make it about twice as long as Jones was the best defensive centerfielder in MLB without thinking about it much. Jones did not sustain hall of fame level play and since baseball players have long careers Hall of Fame baseball players have long productive careers. If he was an NBA player then being that great for six years (don't feel like looking it up) would be great. In baseball you're expected to be good for a long time.

I assume that Vizquel gets in by the way, but I don't think he'll get in right off. Is Paul Blair in the Hall of Fame incidentally? I don't think he is. He doesn't have offensive numbers, but from all I have heard he was the best outfield glove ever. He won several rings as well. Being great defensively isn't enough and neither are 400 home runs.

Re: Andruw Jones - Hall of Fame?

Ozzie was a dominant defensive player at a position where defense is very important. So was Jones. I'm not going to argue that Jones' defensive impact was equal to Ozzie's or sustained as long, but it's pretty close. Jones won 10 straight gold gloves legitimately, not based off reputation. That's only 3 fewer than Smith. Ozzie Smith was a mediocre at best hitter, and while Jones was never a consistently great hitter he did have 5 years of 35+ HR and 100+ RBI, had that one great season where he barely missed out on the MVP and has some pretty impressive career power numbers.

I think Jones and Vizquel should both be Hall of Famers. I mean, Andruw Jones is legitimately one of the greatest defensive outfielders ever. Only Mays and Clemente have more gold gloves than him. You throw in 400+ homers and some postseason success, he deserves it.
