Re: October Expansion

Too bad this change wasn't made a few years ago when the Blue Jays would have had a chance to be team #5. But now with Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, Tigers, Angels, and Rangers decidedly ahead of them, they still don't have a chance.

I love the change. September will become the most exciting month in baseball from now on.

Re: October Expansion

I like the fact that it rewards the teams for winning their division. Now we will see wild card teams forced to use their #2 starter in game 1 of the NLDS.

Re: October Expansion

Excellent decision by MLB. Add two more teams to the playoffs for more fans to root for. Doesn't affect the division winners in any shape or form. Baseball gets it right again.

Re: October Expansion

This is the rare occasion that I agree completely with Joey K. This is definitely a good decision on baseball's part and although a lot of fans of wild card teams could be somewhat irked by it - I don't see a major issue with a second place team having to fight a little more to get in. It rewards the teams that play all season the best giving them a distinct advantage over the wild card squads.

I agree, its a great thing for more teams to be involved in the playoff race, and the one game wildcard will be epic, some of the best games over the last few years have been win to get in tie breaker games... i think this makes september potentially awesome

Re: October Expansion

I'm kinda torn. I like the idea of expanding the playoffs and I like the idea of rewarding the top teams during the regular season. I'm just not sure this is the best way of accomplishing both those goals, mostly because divisions are of varying degrees of strength from year to year. Say the Yankees win 110 games this year, the Rays win 105. Why should the 90 win AL Central champ and 88 win AL West champ be rewarded while the second best team in the League risks having their great 162 game season thrown away by ONE game?

I'd be in favor of having 3 division winners and 3 wild cards in each league making the playoffs with the two best teams being rewarded for their great regular seasons with a bye.

Since that's not an option, I suppose I like this expansion as a step in the right direction.

I understand your concerns, but each division plays to the largest degree within itself. The divisions do allow very likely 'lesser' teams a chance to reach the playoffs because as you said, of the difference in each divisions strength. The MLB format may not be perfect, but it is in my opinion, the best sports have to offer. We could always go to the NCAA college BCS format. :gunner::twoguns:
