Could Max Scherzer win a Cy Young? (no, not this year)

Max Scherzer is in his fifth season in the big leagues, fourth full season. He's posted fantastic strikeout numbers throughout, but his overall numbers have been mediocre. The numbers I would like to look at are his final four months in 2010, and what his final four months are shaping up to be in 2012.

In the first two months of 2010, the first two months of 2012, and the entirety of 2011: Max Scherzer has been little better than a middle-rotation guy, if that.

Final 4 months of 2010: (the solid fullness of all of June-July-August-September)
2.45 ERA
1.10 WHIP
9.2 K/9
11W-7L
6 2/3 IP/Start

And now what he's done since the end of May this year: (3 full months, and was red hot to start September tonight)
2.65 ERA
1.13 WHIP
11.5 K/9
10W-2L
6 2/3 IP/Start

So, he's pretty much pitched at a Cy Young level in a past season for 4 solid months to close it out after a horrendous and abysmal to an obscene level... This year after spending the first two months again at a horrendous and abysmal to an obscene level he's spent 3 solid months, going on 4 possibly, at a Cy Young level. Is this someone capable of one day winning a Cy Young? Is 2011 the norm for him? Or the final 4 months of 2010 and this year?

I think he could eventually put it all together and sustain it for a full year. He clearly has Cy Young stuff and always has.

Re: Could Max Scherzer win a Cy Young? (no, not this year)

Scherzer is like the Adam Dunn of pitchers. Every outcome is either a strikeout, walk, or homerun.

His run numbers over the last couple of months are finally starting to match up with his ability, and it's been all about HR's. I don't know if it's luck or an adjustment, but he was giving them up at an absurd rate earlier in the year (almost 20% of flyballs) and that is starting to come down.

If he can continue to limit the longball and maybe cut back the walks a bit, he definately has elite #1 stuff.

Looks like he pretty much has the award locked in now. Good call CW.

Re: Could Max Scherzer win a Cy Young? (no, not this year)

I had forgotten about this thread. I wouldn't say he has it on lock - he's got (probably) 5 starts left? If he implodes twice his ERA could balloon to a level that takes the award out of his hands.

Both Yu and Felix could wind up with 16-17 wins if they win out - enough to compete with a 21 win Max Scherzer *if* he has a poor final month.. Iwakuma, Sanchez, and Kuroda would all have to pass up Yu, Felix, AND Max to win it - so I'm saying at this point they're out of it.

Also - What about Big Fat Bart? He wins out and gets to 19 wins with an ERA in the 2.70s he could take it too. The AL Cy Young is far from "wide open" but Max Scherzer has enough starts left to say he could give it away.
