Brewers sign Kyle Lohse

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/ey...eball/21948086

Quote:
CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman reports that free-agent right-hander Kyle Lohse has agreed to a deal with the Brewers, pending a physical. Heyman adds that Lohse is right now en route to Brewers camp for his pre-signing examination.

The 34-year-old Lohse remains available despite a 2012 season in which he posted a 2.86 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 3.76 K/BB ratio across 211 innings and finished seventh in the NL Cy Young balloting. The 2012 campaign was easily Lohse's best ever, and the question moving forward is whether he can approximate that performance again in 2013 and beyond. For his career, the 12-year veteran has a record of 118-109 and an ERA+ of 97.

Lohse figures to slot in behind ace Yovani Gallardo in the Milwaukee rotation.

While Lohse has been keeping himself fit this offseason, he figures to need some time to round into regular-season shape. As such, it's not yet certain when he'll be able to join the Brewers' starting five.
3 years 33 million for Lohse and they have to give up their first round pick, 17 overall to division rival St. Louis. Not sure if this move makes the brewers any more of a threat to Cincy and ST Louis but their pitching staff looked terrible beyond Gallardo and Marco Estrada.

Did he have any other offers? Timing is weird. A week before opening day?

Its extremely late in the spring to be signing especially considering how good he was last year but he is a boras guy, and any team that signed him would not only have to pay him boras money but also give up their first round pick, it took a team like Milwaukee who had come into the spring hoping to give a few of their young guys a crack at the rotation to completely flop in order for this to get done.

As far as I know the new compensation rules are in effect. The Brewers will lose #17, but all the Cardinals will get is a sandwich round pick.

Considering MLB Draft is nothing like other sports. This is a solid move for Brewers but i still dont see it as enough to overcome Stl and Cincy

Everyone knew once spring training over and teams had a chance to look at what they had in their rotation a team that thinks they have a shot would sign him. Solid move by the Brewers

Re: Brewers sign Kyle Lohse

We have given out decent sized contracts to both Suppan and Randy Wolf over the last few years, so brewer fans are a little hesitant to embrace a pitcher in his mid 30's, but Lohse has much better stuff then either suppan or wolf did so i think he will be fine, also its only a 3 year deal, by the trade deadline next year he can probably be moved relatively easily if we wanted to

I was just making a joke about Suppan's general suckage. He was one of those guys that Boston's front office used to tell us (back when he was the heart & soul of Boston's next rotation along with Brian Rose, Carl Pavano and Tony Armas Jr.) "Sure, his stuff doesn't jump off the page at you, but he knows how to win." Unfortunately the junk that minor leaguers couldn't hit the major leaguers could. And hard.

Somewhat related but how good is their ace Yovani Gallardo? Should I be jacked to have him on my fantasy team?

He was the Greg Maddux of the International League at one time. I used to love watching him pitch when he was still in the minors. Unfortunately for Soupcan a 90 mph fastball and 80 mph change just doesn't cut the mustard in the majors. Even Maddux had a better spread between the fastball and change than that.
