Justin Verlander gets PAID

Per ESPN, 7 years, $180M.

He's a happy guy today.

Re: Justin Verlander gets PAID

Any time I see a 7 year deal (or frankly anything over 3-4 years) for a pitcher I get nervous... that being said, he's really really good.

Verlander knows how to WIN, and that is all that counts.

Re: Justin Verlander gets PAID

Largest contract for a pitcher ever.

He's the best, but 7 years with a vesting option for 8? That's a ballsy risk.

Re: Justin Verlander gets PAID

That's a lot of money for a pitcher who just turned 30 but I guess Detroit didn't really have a choice. Losing him for nothing would have been a franchise crippling move.

Re: Justin Verlander gets PAID

I think that's the climate of baseball. You keep your own before they hit free agency.

I saw the opposite happen in St. Louis when they let Pujols hit the market.

Re: Justin Verlander gets PAID

Love this deal. Absolutely love it. Justin Verlander is really one of the most technically sound fireballers in the game. Not in a Mark Prior "his form is perfect" sort of way - but in a "all his power comes from his legs" sort of way. Even when he's really reaching back for that fireball fastball - he's throwing easy. Any pitcher on any day can fall out of alignment for one pitch and ruin himself - but Verlander is as close to a safe bet as you're going to see in baseball.
