Last few years: Start of a new MLB Era?
Look I'm sure someone can prove me wrong with numbers here, but I just feel like everywhere I look there's Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, Manny Machado, Yasiel Puig, Wil Myers, Freddie Freeman, Giancarlo Stanton, Eric Hosmer... then there's Julio Teheran, Shelby Miller, Jose Fernandez... What do all of these guys have in common? They're all 23 or younger. That's 11 guys coming into the league and at 23 playing not just at a big league level, but an ALL STAR level (Hosmer's glove elevates him to the list, and he's gonna hit).
Not all of them are going to pan out, I know - but I wouldn't bet against any of them. Some will get hurt, some will flame out in some way... but its very possible that the current group of 23 and unders could have 5+ Hall of Famers. Some of these kids could stay right where they are and not improve one iota - do what they're doing now for the peak of a strong full MLB career - and that'd be a level that would get in. They're made-to-order stars.
I wonder how this effects Selig's memory long term. If Major League Baseball is ascending into a new golden era of star players, the league's growing health could have a positive effect on his legacy (I already have a positive outlook on his era, next to Basketball and Hockey and Roger Goodell - he's been great. Pales next to Tagliabue), it's certainly profiting right now!
DETROIT! Lets Restore the Roar!
We can all to that.
