Re: 2013 WORLD SERIES: St. Louis Cardinals (2) vs. Boston Red Sox (1)

Not once the ball gets by the fielder. The fielder loses right of way when he's no longer part of the play. Middlebrooks is obstructing the runner if any contact is made when he is not making a play on the ball. Since the ball went down the line, he was not making a play on it.

There is no reason for Salty to throw that ball, period.

Middlebrooks wasn't in the base path. It was Craig's responsibility to avoid him. And he could have. For ****'s sake he was already falling down before he even made that out-of-basepath contact with Middlebrooks.

So because our half-retarded catcher slings an idiotic throw to third and it gets away, THAT justifies any idiotic, series-deciding blown call that happens afterwards as our own fault? Get the hell out of here.

No reason to argue this.

You're wrong.

Ad populum? That's all you got? Guess I shouldn't be surprised considering that you can barely string two sentences together.

Not so nice try.

I'm right, "dude." Jim Joyce is a cornball who tanked the series. And your boys benefited from it so you're cool with it.

Is the whole Cardinals fanbase desperately defending this like a nutty christian who's been confronted with evolution?

Re: 2013 WORLD SERIES: St. Louis Cardinals (2) vs. Boston Red Sox (1)

Quote:
Rule 2.00 (Obstruction) Comment: If a fielder is about to receive a thrown ball and if the ball is in flight directly toward and near enough to the fielder so he must occupy his position to receive the ball he may be considered “in the act of fielding a ball.” It is entirely up to the judgment of the umpire as to whether a fielder is in the act of fielding a ball. After a fielder has made an attempt to field a ball and missed, he can no longer be in the “act of fielding” the ball. For example: an infielder dives at a ground ball and the ball passes him and he continues to lie on the ground and delays the progress of the runner, he very likely has obstructed the runner.
I as much as anyone would prefer the Cardinals to lose (though only in a lesser of two evils situation), but it seems to fit with this pretty well. I feel like it might not have been called if Middlebrooks hadn't lifted his legs up the way that he did, though.

As for the basepath bit:

Quote:
A runnerís base path is established when the tag attempt occurs and is a straight line from the runner to the base he is attempting to reach safely
That's without even considering the 3 feet range runners get.

Very likely? What if he's out of the basepath and the runner seemingly goes out of his way to stumble into him?

What tag is this? The one that occurred after the supposed interference already happened?

The rulebook supports what happened. You don't want to accept that, and that's fine. There's no sense continuing here. The series is 2-1. Move on.
