Today's news is that Kung Fu Panda is arriving on a 5/102 deal.

Last year the Red Sox were a National League team given how horrifically their 3B hit (their combined OPS was like .550 last year). Going from that to Panda is huge. Similarly replacing Cespedes with an OPS .800+ player is an upgrade.

I dont see them replacing Cespedes tho unless its for an upper level pitcher.

Haven't seen much about it, but I think they will transfer Pablo to 1st, Hanley at 3rd, and leave Cespedes in the OF (likely RF though where he would be more useful).

Hopefully they move Victorino and/or Craig if they really want to make room in the OF... Betts played well in a lot of meaningless games last year so I'm good with letting him play in the minors for a bit otherwise I would like to take him as our 4th guy. Would love a OF of Rusney, Bradley, Cespedes.

After Yankees let Cano walk these are the kinda deal i was hoping they would do. But instead Boston got Hanley and Panda for less then Cano cost Seattle

They desperately need pitching. Right now they have an oft-injured pseudo-ace and a collection of end-of-the-rotation starters. Cespedes is the one guy they have that's going to have value to a lot of teams looking for a corner OF with pop. Seattle, Cincinnati, San Diego, and San Francisco are looking for players like Cespedes, and it's almost certain he'll be suiting up for one of them.

Yeah, the Red Sox are going to trade bats for arms. They got a lot of extra position players and their rotation is not good enough when you are trying to compete for rings. They got any number of guys they might move for Cole Hamels if Lester signs some place else.

If its for an upper level pitcher, i can see it happening. Otherwise i dont think Cespedes is anywhere else come opening day.

And buchholz anything near an ace? Get him out sooner rather than later.

They didn't sign Hanley Ramirez to be bench depth. And they didn't give Rusney Castillo $10 million per year to be a supersub. And Mookie Betts has all star written all over him and won't be coming off the bench. Put another way, with Ortiz at the DH, Kung Fu Panda at third, either Cespedes or Napoli will be playing elsewhere next year. As the Tigers have already offered Porcello for him, the bidding on him is open. Boston probably prefers Price, though.

I said pseudo-ace. For 60-80 innings a year he looks like a #1 starter. The rest of the time he's either injured or pitching like a 3/4 guy. I would prefer that they move him but he doesn't have a lot of value and they'll probably just let him pitch out the string as a #3 /4 guy.

Except Cespedes won't be the only OF with power on the market. Could be guys like Justin Upton, Jay Bruce, and Matt Kemp to trade for.

Nap can kick rocks IMO..clearly hanley isnt bench depth, i didnt say he was at all, its why I just see panda playing first before they move cespedes via trade. obviously if i see an offer of a pitcher anywhere near the quality of Price i jump at it just like anyone else.

I agree about betts. But it wont be this year for him and we should wait to see more out of him. He played a TON of meaningless games last year. Give him some more time since its on our side in his case. Like i said, lets roll an OF of yoenis, bradley, and rusney come opening day and go from there.

I would pay to see a David Price and David Ortiz buddy/buddy press conference btw lol

Re: Red Sox, Hanley Ramírez agree to 5-yr/~$90M deal

Cespedes has a heck of a lot more trade value than Napoli, which is why he's the one that's going to be suiting up elsewhere next year.

Forget Betts' counting numbers and look at the peripherals, high contact rates, low K rates, good isolated power numbers for a line drive hitter, good walk rates and a batting average on balls in play that isn't abnormally high (high BABIP numbers are a regression to the mean red flag). As a comparison while Bogaerts' counting numbers looked as good in his 2013 call up, he had a high BABIP and a high K rate, and overall peripherals that just weren't as good. so I have a lot more faith in Betts ability to be the leadoff man than Bogaerts ability to be a middle of the order bat.

EDIT: This is something I've noticed in the Ben Cherington era, in hitters the Red Sox have changed their philosophy somewhat, and this may be a reflection of the post-steroid era. But in their drafting and international free agent signings they seem to be actively looking for high contact % guys with line drive power over traditional fly ball power. Even their one high profile power prospect, Rafael Devers, is a heavy line drive hitter. Betts, Rusney Castillo, Blake Swihart, Carlos Asuaje, Manuel Margot, Wendell Rijo, Javier Guerra, the Basabe brothers, Michael Chavis. That and switch hitters.
