Randy Johnson, Smoltz, Biggio and Pedro Martinez elected to Hall of Fame

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/105660...e-hall-of-fame

Quote:
NEW YORK -- Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz and Craig Biggio were elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in a blockbuster vote by the Baseball Writers' Association of America on Tuesday. The three pitchers were voted in their first time on the ballot, while Biggio was selected in his third year.
It was the first time in 60 years that the BBWAA has elected four players from the same ballot and the first time three pitchers were elected in the same year. The BBWAA has now elected 119 of the 215 Major League players in the Hall.

Johnson received 97.3 percent of the vote from the BBWAA, Martinez 91.1 percent, Smoltz 82.9 percent and Biggio 82.7 percent. Mike Piazza fell 28 votes shy at 69.9 percent, and Jeff Bagwell received 55.7 percent. Piazza crept inevitably closer, rising from 62.2 percent last year. This year, 549 ballots were cast by eligible BBWAA members with 10 or more consecutive years in the organization. Seventy-five percent is needed to earn induction into Cooperstown, 412 votes this year. Last year, when first-timers Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Frank Thomas were elected, Biggio missed by only two votes.

Voting, no love for steroid users obviously. How long has Raines been eligible. He seems like an interesting case to me without looking too closely. He's the sort of modern hitter that doesn't have a lot of analogs, so much speed and power combined. Probably lost a lot of his career to that awful surface in Montreal too.

did Piazza get jobbed or no? I'm a Dodgers fan and I'm not sure - on the one hand, one of the greatest hitting catchers of all time (who was better?) but defensively? pretty pedestrian

First time since 1955 that 4 players have been elected. Johnson, Pedro, and Smoltz were locks going into the voting and Biggio was due. Piazza should get in next year.

You know the MLB HOF is a Joke when Aaron f'n Boone gets a few votes

Bagwell should be in though. He was never busted for Steroids(Atleast im pretty sure he never was)

Yeah there's a hierarchy to this shit. Some guys are first ballot hall of famers and other guys have to wait their turn. Piazza has to wait until there's fewer guys hogging the votes.

THis just means the entire process is stupid. If you think a guy is a HOFer, he is a HOFer. He does not do anything between now and the next vote.

Barry Bonds and Roger Clemons not getting in confirms these wannabe ball players have no business deciding anything.

Raines only 2 years eligibility left with period reduced from 15 to 10. Might get in next year as class isn't strong.

As a Blue Jay fan I'm sad Delgado got less than the 5% requisite to continue on. His numbers are comparable to McGriff. Not saying he necessarily deserves to be in though. Just one of my favourite players.

Blame the voters who are on a crusade against players tainted by the steroid era. Now that being said, I think that they're surprisingly doing well with that considered. I honestly can see them getting within their ten year window and if not then I think the Veterans Committee will vote them in down the road.

It's dumb because there are a lot of players who haven't been voted in yet just because they are from that era, when there is no proof that they had anything to do with it - e.g. Bagwell and Piazza.

Re: Randy Johnson, Smoltz, Biggio and Pedro Martinez elected to Hall of Fame

Some people simply do not understand how seriously some people take the game of baseball. You have to remember that the game has been played in this country for a century and a half, people learn the game from their Dad's who learned the game from their Dad. It is ingrained in the fabric of society, especially for the older voters who remember when it was the only sport that mattered.

Those old farts are never going to forgive the steroid cheaters and they aren't going to forgive them either. So far as they are concerned those people betrayed something sacred.

In somewhat related news Curt Schilling is a clueless moron and Obama is keeping him out of Cooperstown.

Steroids made baseball exciting. It literally saved the game after the strike. No one was complaining when stadiums were sold out and everyone was making money.
