Another 3 pt shooter with size...

NDSCS Men’s Basketball

@NDSCShoops

Congrats to All-American Duoth Gach on breaking the career 3-point FG record at NDSCS previously held by his older brother, Gach Gach. Duoth is currently at 184 (and counting) in just 57 career games. He's shooting 46.4 percent from 3 this season.

Interesting to see UVM fans pining over potential JUCO transfers after slamming UA for picking them up over the years.
Don't generalize the entire fan base. No one is obsessing over Jucos here. I'm only entertaining myself since UVM goes double secret probation on recruiting these days. Not to mention the bashing of UA and their Juco's is also a select number of posters not the entire fanbase.

Generally not in favor of recruiting JuCo’s becoming a thing, but if there’s someone out there that shoots like this SG from TX we’ve offered and it’s April signing season then I’m for it.

Additionally, so I’m being fair I’m also generally less interested in D1 transfers and grad transfers these days. Think Becker’s results there have been decidedly mixed since taking over. For every Peyton Henson there’s been other guys that...weren’t Peyton Henson.

Give me a 4yr HS player everyday and twice on Sunday’s. They have always been and will continue to be our best players. But I’m also a realist and understand every coach is on a short-term window and has to win now, so it’s inevitable these players are going to end up on your roster.

Trae Bell Haynes was an April signee.

Unsigned 4yr HS players are still out there, FWIW. Just have to do the work to find them then scoop them up.

Both Gach is currently a 6-6 point guard from Minnesota averaging 10 points a game at the U. of Utah. Both's parents emigrated from South Sudan. If you've got a couple of Gach brothers in North Dakota who are about the same size, playing guard, and shooting from the perimeter, they must be closely related.

They've also demonstrated that they can live in places with cold winters!

First...posting random guys might be entertaining for everyone's amusement, but it's actually pretty easy to figure out who UVM is recruiting or showing an interest in if you put on your detective hat using social media.

Second, as much as it's a generalization...UVM fans do have a stuffy attitude toward it. Thankfully the one who was banned from these parts for being a racist and threatening people offline is gone. But, the many who don't use the internet still are. We all gotta accept there are shit fans in our ranks and people are gonna remember it even if most of us aren't the culprit.

Third, UVM's been lucky that its best players have stuck around for 4 years. It's even luckier its bench players have stuck around to carve out roles since Becker got things really kicking. But the reality is roster construction at all levels of the game has changed. The staff is smart (and has the luxury with building good teams) to know if they can't get who they want in the early period, taking a look toward transfers and the occasional JUCO in addition to a potential late signee just increases their options and that's a good thing as far as I'm concerned. There are some years I wished they'd gone the JUCO route if only to plug a hole in the lineup (defensive big/3 point shooter specialist, etc...guys who get they're coming in to be glue guys). I think that's a fair approach for UVM and I think it's admirable the coaching staff is adaptable and looking at different avenues to continue success while staying grounded and knowing what works for them.

Finally, I think Becker's transfer rate I'd give a C...Even if Henson is the standout, the likes of Candon Rusin, Trey Blue, Hector Harold, Darren Payen and Sam Dingba carved out some sort of role that was needed with various degrees of importance. Giddens strattles the line of useful and total dud, it's still debateable, Josh Hearlihy was a dud (just didn't fit the system), but we all can agree Ryan Pierson absolutely sucked. Demuth I think is a TBD, so is Mazzulla obviously. I think the problem is expecting transfers to be your best player...UVM doesn't roll the ball out and say let em play, so you're not getting Malik Ellison-level impact.

All very nice problems to have as a UVM fan.

Giddens when his head is in the right place is useful in his role. When he's clearly frustrated like the last two games, he's a liability and I begin to fear for the safety of the opposition. Demuth has played with 0 confidence. He gives off the impression of someone who's just trying not to get yelled at. He's not going to be useful until he can put the ball on the floor with confidence. He will never be going through people with that build. Knowing that, he'd better be able to go around them and use his agility to his advantage. Mazzulla is a proven quantity at this level. Unfortunately he doesn't add a piece that the team was missing. He simply adds to areas of the team that were already strong. He'll be fine, he just won't shore up areas of weakness.

PS. I don't have a twitter account, so cyberstocking who the coaching staff is following isn't an option.

Phenom Hoops will be covering the NCISAA Final Four & Championships in Charlotte this weekend ... brackets went pretty much chalk, except in 3A where 7-Seed Cape Fear Academy, with the Senior trio of Emmanuel Bonsu, Georges Lefebvre (Vermont) & Ivan Misic, has made a run

After three tournament wins, they finally lost in the semis tonight to finish a good 22-7 season. I'm looking forward to seeing what Lefebvre brings to Vermont. Though he often plays on the wing, at 6-9 he looks like the first option to back up Davis in the low post.

Sorry to be harsh, but I really dont get why so many people are enamored with Bonsu. He doesn’t seem to bring anything that UVM is in search of and doesn’t look like he has a lot of upside either.

Sure, he’s a sturdy physical guard that might fit into our defensive scheme but he doesn’t look like a great shooter, mediocre ball handler and lacks D1 quickness/athleticism. I don’t understand why his name keeps popping up here. I think there are bigger fish we can still chase that better fit UVM’s needs (Stretch PF’s more athletic than Davis and knock down 3pt shooting wings with long arms).

On the topic of the remaining scholarships, would Becker give one to Fiorillo at the end of this season, or does Fiorillo realistically have to have a season under his belt (like Shungu) before that would happen? From what I’ve seen of him he looks like he earned it. I can’t wait to see his progression next year when he gets on the court.

Bonsu has long been teammates with a stretch PF who's more athletic than Davis (and probably Fiorillo, too) and is also from Montreal.

Ya, and we already have an LOI from that athletic stretch PF (I’m excited for Lefebore but his raw-ness and struggle to finish in the paint against D1 interior defenders is not lost one me...it will take time to get him in the rotation).

I just don’t get this obsession with Bonsu and why UVM fans are painting him as some charity case that we need to give a scholly to as if Lefebvre’s decisions was dependent on bringing Bonsu along with him.

I think that's a misread, man.

His name has been mentioned a few times because he's Lefebvre's teammate. A couple people said he looks like a good player (I agree, though I also don't think he's really what UVM needs right now). Beyond that, I don't really see a "Draft Bonsu!" movement developing here.

Everything I've seen on the kid sounds positive; his work ethic, attitude, academic skills, basketball skill, etc. He's the type of player Vermont recruits, and I imagine he'll Shungu himself onto a mid-major.

This kid's no great shakes athletically, but I appreciate his offensive skill set.

Albany...recruiting every JUCO that can walk...this list is without a doubt even bigger than this. I have a LOOONNNG history of railing against this strategy but I don't even care any more. Do 10x time Hartford did with their mercenaries. Load up on the most talented kids you can find even 1 year kids. In fact...run off every present player...just recruit over EVERY ONE! I mean if we are going to BURN this thing to the ground...LET'S BURN IT!
