Went up against the SEC championship game.

Big East was in direct competition with more than we were, but they also lost pretty badly to the MWC. Their issue is they're the only one on FOX, whereas the MWC had the B1G semi-final game lead into it and likely had a bunch of holdovers on CBS.
I have seen the FOX speculation, but I dont really get that- FOX just aired the Super Bowl and the World Series. Unless their broadcast for CBB is that unwatchable? Hard to imagine it being worse than your average B team broadcast on any network.

The game was a blowout, for one, but that’s a brutal time slot. 630 on a Saturday is right in the thick of when so many people are doing anything but sitting in front of their television. That’s something I’ve always loved about the A10 title. People are more likely to be in front of their tv at that time, and it’s occurrence only a few hours before the selection show gives it a big time feel.

There were millions of people watching basketball at the time of the Big East championship. They weren't even the #2 in the timeslot - that was the MWC championship game (Big East had 60% the viewership of MWC).

A likely reason: millions of people watched the game on CBS before the MWC game, and were heavily advertised to stay and watch the next game, featuring a usually very good SDSU team. A lot of casual fans likely just stayed and didn't even bother to check there were other games on.

It has nothing to do with watchability and everything to do with laziness/contentness of people to stay on the same channel.

Everyone is forgetting that the outcome of the Big East championship game only involved seeding. The A10 and MWC games determined NCAA tournament bids. I almost never watch P6 tournament games, particularly championship games, because there is almost never any drama in the outcome.
