C- Hakeem Olajuwon
PF- Bill Russell
SF- Scottie Pippen
SG- Michael Jordan
PG- Gary Payton

Yeah, I left Kobe off the list, so you can go ahead and call me a "hater"
Kobe is my fav player but his D is no wher near scotties or mj
Pippen is the greatest team defender in the NBA history.

IMO, this one is for you KC, I think T-Mac's best potential is not in offense, but the team defense he can play like the way Pippen did it in Bulls for so many years.

Sure people think T-Mac is the better player overall than Vince Carter, just like others suggested Pippen was a better overall player than Jordan. But that "Better" overall doesn't translate into a better first option. If T-Mac didn't leave the Raptors, because of the way he likes to play with the ball while Vince Carter doesn't need the TIME to get his shots off, I thought Tracy and Vince can compliment(sp?) each other well. And while letting Vince be the first option of the team, he is a better PURE scorer and clutch player, Tracy can actually spend more enegry on "D" which what Pippen did for the Bulls, the ROAMING DEFENSE! Many of times Pip's D effect isnt visible on the score sheet but it was very important for the team.

Anyway, if T-Mac could have stayed with Vince, with Vince improving with his on-the-ball defense, they truly have a chance against the Lakers.

Shaq can't touch Hakeem on the defensive end, and Rodman? He is no Bill Russell......
Shaq got his *** wooped by Hakeem when they played in the Finals!
Ahh, a fellow System fan!

Anyway yeah I agree, Shaq is nowhere near The Dream over his career. And even though he's "supposedly" better now, Hakeem in his prime would easily put him in his place.
The ONLY time Shaq got dominated by the Dream was in his first 2 seasons,THATS IT!Just to let u know, that was a Dream in his prime and a rook Shaq!Id like to see Hakeem try to push around a Shaq in his prime,it AINT gonna happen,Shaq would manhandle him,and thats the bottom line!Im NOT saying Rodman is better then Russell, cuz that would be RETARDED!Its just that Rodzilla is one of my favorite ballers, not to mention a MONSTER board crasher!
This Day In Age Defensive Team:

C-Dikembe Mutombo
PF-Ben Wallace
SF-Bruce Bowen
SG-Michael Curry
PG-Gary Payton
Curry is a scrub. I respect Bowen, though. I'd have to agree and say Dream, Bill, Pip, MJ, GP is the greatest defensive team ever...and they wouldn't have too much trouble scoring either, haha...

Head coach must be Jeff Van Gundy, Mike Fratello, or Pat Riley.

leaving him off doesn't make you a hater. mentioning him though, makes you a bit obsessed:D

good list though.
I'm obsessed? OK, you are the one following me around and answering all of my posts....
All Time and the Future

Of All Time

PG: GARY PAYTON, He is easily the top defensive PG of all time, there are some close but they have not been as consitent.

PF: BILL RUSSELL, they best defensive mind in basketball history possibly, awesome defensive stats rebounding, first player to really play defense at that level.

SF: SCOTTIE PIPPEN, yeah he probably is the best defender in NBA history, he gets in passing lains, defeneds on and off the ball, gets rebounds, steals, block shots, eveything!

PF: DENNIS RODMAN, amost right up there with Russell rebounding, has one of the best drives to get a basketball of any player, I dought if they will ever be a player that throws his body anywhere to get a loose ball!

C: MUTOMBO, I don't think there is a center in NBA history that affected the game defensivly like Mutombo, great shot blocker and super rebounder, just needs to get the league to switch back to man to man DE........
*Wilt was a choice to with his 20 rebs a game average.

Soon to be
KEVIN GARNETT: Can defend anyone on the court, from PG-C, if he works at it more he could be the best ever, can do it all just like Scottie, but Scottie could not defend PF-C, but KG can!

BEN WALLACE: He to just needs to keep it up, very quick at rebounding and quick off his feet, he is like Dennis but bigger and more athletic....

TRACY MCGRADY: With his length and speed he could be real good, he already is a pretty good rebounder for a guard, just needs to work on steals and on the ball, but he does have to save energy for offense unlike Scottie at times.

I agree!

Bowen can't stop people, he sure couldn't stop Kobe! Michael Curry? Please! I've seen NON-top-tier guards toast the heck out of Curry & Bowen both and more times than I can count.
I think Bowen is not overrated on the defensive end. He guarded Kobe preety good without any team defense helping him.

Carter, T-Mac could probably kill Bowen too if Bowen tries to guard them one-on-one without getting help?

IF Bowen doesn't have help defense from the rest of the spurs, then I'm a monkey's uncle! That team plays team defense the way Riley's teams did.

There is NO way Bowen can stop Vince or TMac from scoring - even though he has a ton of help defense. Duncan is NOT exactly called Mr. Fundamentals (as that term is for defense as well as offense) for nothing, nor is David, or Rose. Those guys close in on the weak side, too, like an alligator getting a free meal.

When I saw Bowen on the old Celtics team, which did NOT have help defense at that time (98 & 99), he wasn't any different than he is now - solid, but he still has a way to go defensively to meet my criteria for a great all around defender.

And please score at least 14 PPG while defending to keep people honest!
But they don't do that collapsing defense on Kobe tho something Knicks and the Sixers did it to Carter.
