it is a bit of a copout to put russell at pf since he exclusively played center. which is the tough part of putting together all-time nba teams, because arguably 5 of the top 10 players ever played the same position.

the easiest one are jordan at the 2 and bird at the 3 (as great as elgin was). the 4 doesn't have anyone yet at a top 10 level, imo (although elgin could be put at the 4), although malone has the best body of work. the 1 spot has magic and oscar. the 5 has wilt/russ/kareem (and some would argue shaq & hakeem).

All honesty, Russell was only like 6'8. He may have been a pest, but could he really have dominated Duncan in the post?

My list -

C - Shaq (he would steamroll over Wilt and Kareem)
PF - Duncan
SF - Bird
SG - MJ (I think the only gimme on here)
PG - Magic

Russell at PF works. It works to a T on video games, and Russell's 6'8" anyway. Wilt was very tall, like 7'1"

I like this one, too. I could accept this as close enough to the best player ever at their position.
PG - Stockton
SG - Big O
SF - Adrian Dantley
PF - Barkley/Elvin Hayes
C - Kareem

Maybe if you don't use this team's prime, glorious days.

PG - Tiny Archibald
SG - Bernard King
SF - Pippen
PF - Bellamy
C - Hakeem/Sampson

First Team All-History

Center: Hakeem Olajuwon
Power Foward: Bill Russell
Small Forward: Larry Bird
Shooting Guard: Michael Jordan
Point Guard: Magic Johnson

Second Team All-History

Center: Wilt Chamberlain
Power Foward: Karl Malone
Small Forward: Scottie Pippen
Shooting Guard: Jerry West
Point Guard: Oscar Robertson

Third Team All-History

Center: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Power Foward: Kevin McHale
Small Forward: Julius Erving
Shooting Guard: Clyde Drexler
Point Guard: Isaiah Thomas

I moved Russell to power forward, as I think there's a good chance that that's where he'd play in today's game. Plus, it got him into the first team, where he deserves to be.

In my opinion there are no "locks"other than Jodan.

For instance, I like this:

Kareem/Hakeem
Malone/Barkley
Bird/Dr J
Jordan/West
Magic/Oscar

But I couldn't argue with this either:

Wilt
Hayes
Baylor
MJ
Stockton

The point is one would really have to take time to think about how the players games would mesh as a team to do this justice, and I admit I haven't done that.

if i had to make a team, based on the positions they played, i'd go:

1st team
c - russell
f - malone
f - bird
g - mj
g - magic

2nd team
c - wilt
f - duncan
f - baylor
g - oscar
g - west

3rd team
c - kareem
f - pettit
f - barry
g - hondo
g - isiah (although stockton's longevity giving him a strong argument)

Ok, so I know there will be some people who will criticize me for putting a lot of modern day players on these ALL NBA Teams. However, the truth is, that players like Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan are hands down better players than those back in the day. Their skills are better, they are more athletic, and most importantly, the competition is MUCH better. So say what you will.

Also, I'd just like to say that I think Hakeem Olajuwon is the best center of all time and if I were to start a team today, I would want him playing the 5 spot.

Tough between Oscar/Jordan and Magic/Stockton, but I think Oscar and Stockton offer the best variety for the lineup. Wilt and Bird were no-brainers, and Duncan's hard to push out.

Yeah, Hondo is a good pick that might not come to mind at first. Mount Mutombo and Tim Hardaway as well.

Penny could be up here if he would've sustained his glory... oh well.

a few comments -

oscar played pg almost exclusively. and he and magic rule that postition.

west, imo, is unquestionably the #2 sg (although he also played some pg).

russell was a center, i truly believe he'd be a center today as well. he was 6'9, and he was athletic and the greatest defender the game has seen. had he played today, he'd be weight training like everyone else. remember, hakeem is 6'10, ben wallace 6'8 or 9, zo 6'10.

Yes, Russell was a center.
But if i played Wilt (or Kareem) at center and i needed a hard-nosed rebounder and defender who played team-ball, i´d put Russell on PF.

Oscar may have played PG almost exclusively, but that's FAR from the only position he 'could' play.

And I'd agree Magic is definitely the best PG of all-time (outside of Oscar), but Stockton fits my starting lineup a bit better.
