Former No. 1 pick Anthony Bennett has cleared waivers and will sign with the Toronto Raptors, a source close to the situation told ESPN Insider Jeff Goodman.

The Minnesota Timberwolves bought out Bennett's contract Wednesday. The buyout was for $3.6 million, a source told The Associated Press.

If Bennett had been claimed on waivers, he would have made his full $5.8 million salary and been owed nothing by the Timberwolves.

Bennett was the top pick of the 2013 draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was traded to Minnesota in the Kevin Love deal in the summer of 2014 but struggled in his lone season there with injuries.

The Timberwolves had attempted to deal Bennett but could not find a trade partner to take him, a league source previously told ESPN's Chris Broussard.

well, don't know where he fits in with our current squad. I wonder if the deal is guaranteed or we might see him get waived before the season started. Bennett might have potential that I don't recognize but as of now James Johnson is a much better player and Johnson isn't that good of a player.

MU did tell us that he wants a Canadian on the team asap and I guess he fulfilled his promise.

I had hoped he'd go to the Raps. That said, unless Patterson, Scola, Carroll or Johnson go down, I don't know where he'll get his minutes.

You're right. It's been a long off season.

Raps fans on other forums believe that Bennett will see time in d-league. With how bad he has played to start his career it's surprising that he has never been sent down by the Cavs or Wolves.
Will be interesting to see. I think he gained a ton of confidence this summer. It's just a question of if he can maintain that going into this upcoming season.

Wolves don't have a there own team so no guarantee he'd have gotten mins if they had sent him down, and by all accounts the Cavs were scared it would do more harm than good.

Well he's in an environment where they will give him ever chance to succeed and fans that will cheer for him.

Even Kwame Brown had a 10+ year career as a useful role player..Hopefully Bennett can too..

Yup!! I'm good with this too. No risk, high reward potential is the way The Star put it.
He's signing for the league minimum and since we have our own D League team he can continue to build with them like he did over the summer with the right supervision and support of the home crowd.

I don't expect he'll see many or any minutes with the team this year but didn't Scola only sign on for a year? Which means we could see a better shake up next year if both PatPat and JamesJ don't have better years than the mediocrity they brought last year. Not to mention that Coboclo might also be ready by then too!!

All in all .... we're finally stronger and deeper at the 4 than we have been in years!!! And everybody loves to have options!! Great job again Masai, great job!!
