I'm glad you posted this because maybe all those people who don't believe me that defenses were much tougher in the 80s and early 90s and that today's low shooting % are only due to the fact that players suck will believe Gary Payton then.

Take it from Gary folks. There is no defense being played today.
It's just bad offense. So when I mention McHale shooting over 60% or Magic shooting 55%+ , they earned it. Today guys have no defense to deal with ( as Gary admits ) and still can't shoot better than 40-45%.

kevin garnett did improve on D
and thats the main reason he is now officialy the best player in the league IMO

Payton is talking about a single aspect of defense, hand-checking.

He's not referring to the more frequent double- and triple-teaming of stars today, the more defensive-minded rules like zone defense or the fact that there are more defensive specialists in the game today.

And he's talking about compared to the '90s, not the '80s, as Payton didn't play in the '80s. In the '80s, defense wasn't nearly so intense or physical and Payton's comments have no bearing on '80s defense.
