Sendek Leaves NC St. for ASU

http://ncstate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=529977

North Carolina State's Herb Sendek has emerged as a strong candidate for the Arizona State coaching vacancy according to a source in the Sun Devil athletic department.

The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that talks between Sendek and Arizona State have taken place and are serious in nature.

Sendek has guided the Wolfpack to five straight NCAA Tournament berths, including a Sweet Sixteen showing in 2005, but he has been the subject of controversy in Raleigh, where many fans are unhappy with the job he has done in a highly competitive Atlantic Coast Conference.
Beyond Sendek, others who remain as potential options include Creighton coach Dana Altman, Saint Mary's coach Randy Bennett and Montana coach Larry Krystkowiak.
Not too sure about this if ASU hires Sendek. He isnt that good of a coach and has dissapointed NCSU fans, despite his 5 straight NCAA appearances. Im not sure why ASU would go after a average coach, when they could get one of the better up and coming coaches. It also makes no sense to go from Majerus to Sendek.

NC State fans are pretty much begging ASU to hire him away from NCSU.

PHOENIX -- North Carolina State basketball coach Herb Sendek has accepted an offer to become the coach at Arizona State, an official with knowledge of the deal confirmed Saturday night.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because there has been no formal announcement.

Arizona State athletic director Lisa Love, who attended the Sun Devils' spring football scrimmage Saturday in Tempe, was unavailable for comment.

Sendek is 258-158 in 13 seasons as a head coach, the last 10 with North Carolina State, where he is 191-132. He spent his first three seasons with Miami of Ohio.
Well his instate record vs. Duke, UNC, and WF is 17-54, so that bodes well for Arizona to continue their domination of ASU.

On a serious note, I really hope he turns around the ASU program, but its going to take a few years. He needs to prove he can recruit, because ASU has last dibs on every west coast recruit outside of the Phoenix area.

Because NC State fans prefer flash over substance and have a massive inferiority complex due to having Duke and UNC down the road. You have to look at the 2nd part of the typical NC State fans plan to truely appreciate the stupidity: Not only do they want to get rid of Sendek, they assume Rick Barnes will be just begging to coach there (yeah, right).

My question is, why would he leave NCSU? He's got some very, very good players on the way and a couple decent ones returning. It's like he's just starting to get things going and he's going to a program to start over again. Doesn't make sense for either program.

I agree, it doesnt make sense for either program, but there have been some high profile coaches interested in the ASU job, because of the location and many people believe with the right coach ASU could pull in some very good players. Im not saying Sendek is a high profile coach, but perhaps ASU and Sendek think he is the guy to turn the program around.

Maybe he just cant take the expecatiation at NC St. and playing in the ACC. At ASU the expectations are so low, he could make the NCAA tournament and look like a God.

Also, what ties to the west coast does Sendek have? I really do not know if he has any or not, but if he doesnt, that would make the hire for ASU even worse. They really need to tap into the talent in Washington and California, not to mention Texas, where Arizona seems to be building their program from. Lets not forget the state of Arizona, at least Rob Evans plucked Christian Polk out of Arizona.
