What would the ideal roster, being realistic and not saying hall of famer etc, be for an NBA team? It is very open to discussion. Here is a shot at it.

Starters:

1 quality grizzled veteran
3 in their prime players
1 hot shot youngster

Main subs:

1 prime timer who may finish the game
1 grizzzled vet
2 up and comers

Others/off and on injurred reserve

1 shooting specialist
1 defensive specialist
2 raw younsters, probably big, with some flashes of great potential
1 ancient solid citizen who sort of helps as a coach as well
1 locker room clown who keeps everyone loose and has his moments.

Hmmm....this sounds a lot like the Lakers...

1 quality grizzled veteran...Rick Fox
3 in their prime players...Shaq, Kobe, Fisher
1 hot shot youngster...Kobe (again)
(Walker wouldn't fit into any of these categories:D )

1 prime timer...Robert Horry
1 grizzled vet...Brian Shaw
2 up and comers...Devean George, Kareem Rush

1 shooting specialist...Tracy Murray
1 defensive specialist...Devean George(again)
2 raw youngsters...Mark Madsen, Slava Medvedenko (they do have "flashes" of great potential)
1 ancient solid citizen...Brian Shaw (again)
1 locker room clown...Shaq (again)

Wait....this also sounds a lot like last season’s Trailblazers...

1 quality grizzled veteran... Pippen
3 in their prime players... Rasheed, Stoudamire, Dale Davis
1 hot shot youngster...Bonzi Wells

1 prime timer...Pippen
1 grizzled vet...Shawn Kemp
2 up and comer... Bonzi, Derek Anderson

1 shooting specialist...Steve Kerr
1 defensive specialist...Ruben Patterson
2 raw youngsters... Zach Randolph, Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje
1 ancient solid citizen...Chris Dudley
1 locker room clown... Hmmm…. Do they have one?? Wait, don’t tell me all Portland needs is a clown!? Hey Portland, guess what, you need me!! I’m perfect for that role!! Save me a sport on your roster!

You got the idea. Now why exactly don't they win more in Portland? That high priced team with Sabonis was an incredible roster 1-12.They did win alot, but lost in the playoffs. Should we amend the playoff roster to add gut check players?

playoff roster would have to include ATLEAST 1 guy like a Robert Horry or John Paxson that you know he will hit it in the clutch

Hey, come to think of it; the 01-02 KINGS have DOUBLE the number of ideal players in each category (besides the 2 raw rookies).

That's 'Best Roster in Theory' X 2!!!

Here's a look:

Starters:

2 quality grizzled veteran (Divac, Christie)
6 in their prime players (Bibby, C-Web, DC, Peja, Divac, Hedo – he starts when Peja/Web is out which is pretty frequent)
2 hot shot youngster (Peja, Hedo)

Main subs:

2 prime timer who may finish the game (Bobby J, Hedo)
2 grizzzled vet (Brent Price, Chucky Brown)
2 up and comers (Hedo, Bobby J)

Others/off and on injurred reserve

2 shooting specialist (Brent Price, Hedo)
2 defensive specialist (Pollard, Bobby J)
2 raw younsters (Gerald Wallace, Martin Cleaves)
2 ancient solid citizen (Chucky Brown, Brent Price)
2 locker room clown who keeps everyone loose and has his moments (Divac, Webber)

And you know what they say in TV, 'too much of a good thing, IS a good thing'!!

I wouldn't be laughing, you think Steve "way out of his prime" Smith is the greatest player ever.

Bwa ha ha ha!

If you watch any Lakers games, you'd know that Devean George is a great defender.

For reasons only a Laker fan will understand, Devean George is very highly regarded in LA!!

And they just used their entire mid-exception to sign him!!!

Bwaaa Haa Haaaa!

Hahhahahaha........trust me, Murray is NO shooting specalist. I bet he never evens sees the floor.

When he is warming up he will never miss a shot, but in the game, he will NEVER hit a shot no matter how open he is.
