Chargers, city attorney in war of words

SAN DIEGO – An attorney for the San Diego Chargers called outspoken City Attorney Mike Aguirre "the Terrell Owens of San Diego" on Thursday and issued a lengthy rebuttal to what the team says have been repeated insults and inaccuracies regarding its attempt to build a new stadium. <!-- begin:sidebar --> <!--startclickprintexclude--><!--endclickprintexclude--> <!-- end:sidebar -->Mark Fabiani, the Chargers' lead negotiator, sent Aguirre a letter and a 26-page attachment in an attempt to counter recent statements, including a radio interview last week in which Aguirre called team owner Alex Spanos "a corporate welfare queen."

In an interview, Fabiani said the team felt it was time to respond to Aguirre.

"We have tried to work with everyone, including Mr. Aguirre, and despite our efforts to do so, he has continued to hurl both personal insults as well as spew out inaccurate information," Fabiani said. "Under the circumstances, we felt like we couldn't let the record stand the way he created the record. We will continue to correct the record whenever he creates misstatements.

"At the same time, we've become convinced it will be very difficult to have any productive discussions in which he's involved."
