ATLANTA — The Atlanta Braves announced on Thursday morning that Chipper Jones will retire at the end of the 2012 season.

The third baseman has expressed an interest in rejoining the Braves in an undetermined position after the current season.

Jones has been with the Braves since he was the No. 1 selection in the MLB draft in 1990. He currently leads the league with 18 years of service with the same club.

Not a surprise. If he wasn't so beat up the last few years maybe he could last longer, but I wouldn't expect him to hang around and become a middling player. Braves really need to improve their offense now. They have so much pitching that it seems like they should be able to trade for a couple of top shelf hitters if they don't have one in the pipeline.

Martin Prado can play some 3B, but he was pretty bad last year. Even worse than Heyward.

I don't know if I would trade any of the starting pitching, though. Because the top three starters are so damn injury prone (Hudson, Jurrjens, Hanson). Minor has looked like the best of the bunch in spring and he was the one on the trade block.
