Braves assistant general manager Dayton Moore was mulling an offer Tuesday night to take over as Royals general manager, sources in Atlanta and Kansas City confirmed to the Journal-Constitution.

Moore, who oversees the Braves' player development and scouting departments, didn't immediately reply to requests for comment.

The Royals asked the Braves for permission to talk to Moore last week, although Allard Baird is still in place as Royals general manager. Owner David Glass announced early this month that he was ready to shake up the team with the majors' worst record.

Moore, 39, is considered the heir apparent to become Braves general manager when John Schuerholz retires. Schuerholz's contract runs through 2007, and he has not indicated when he wants to step down.

The Braves would like to retain Moore, considered baseball's next bright young GM candidate. The Braves are for sale, and there are no assurances of Moore's future with the team.
