I think he'd be an all right hire for the Owls.

I don't get it. I like Bruiser but he has had plenty of opportunities to prove he is should be a "high level" coach and has not gotten it done. What has Drexel done since he has been there? I would go with Dunphy and if that doesn't fly I would expand the search outside Philly.
I agree with both clark1 and PVP. At the risk of ticking umass87 off, Bruiser seems to get a team to a certain point and then no further. I think he would get better players to Temple than Dunphy but Dunphy is a much better bench coach.
I just hope whoever gets it works out. This league can't take another bad coaching hire, especially at Temple.
Why the emphasis on a Philly background?

It seems to me that if a guy is a good coach in NY, NJ, Penn, Mich, Ohio or elsewhere in the region he could do just fine at Temple. It appears that Temple is severely limiting themselves with coaching candidates by sticking so close to home.
Bruiser could very well charm his way into getting the job, with that smile and laugh and whatever ... he reminds me of Isiah Thomas in a lot of ways. But his coaching has always had lukewarm results. I was never that high on him when he was at UMass ... I thought his offense consisted only of running Monty Mack off screens. In three postseasons on his watch, UMass went 0-3 (two NCAA, one NIT). Geez, now I'm mad. I take back my original comment ... I think Temple could do much better.

Hey, is it "under his watch" or "on his watch"? Can't both work?

You have to know Temple from the inside and out to fully understand why Chaney and the admin want someone from Temple or someone who is familiar with the totality of the circumstances and obstacles in coaching there. As andy Katz said, "Temple is one of the more unique jobs in college basketball." This is why Chaney being successful there for so many years is so impressive.

Not that I don't think a good hire can be made from outside of Philly, because I think the right person could make it work; however, Temple would be a huge adjustment for any coach outside of Philly who is unfamiliar with the circumstances there.

ps NO Bruiser....PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

Since Cheney is the only coach I've ever known Temple to have, what are the circumstaces that make Temple unique?
They need to go with Jeff Capel from VCU, if he is interested.

I'm a fan of Capel as well.

Let's see...
Bad neighborhood, no admissions standards, played exclusively zone defense since Harry Litwack started coaching there, very poor fan support, nice facility, impossible OOC schedules, great winning tradition. Not many schools have that combination of elements....
I wonder if, at Temple, a certain former Villanova coach could recreate the havoc he created at UMass.

With all due respect, all of that except the first leaves with the coach. UNLESS, Temple is set on preserving the admission standards, playbook, scheduling etc. If that is the case, then they are going to have to accept the recent trend of ditching the 'winning tradition' every year.

Good coaches typically have broad control over their program within a given framework.
Go for Huggins!

I saw on a blog - maybe Doyle's - that Huggen's people were trying to make some contacts with Temple. I think he'd be good for the league in general as long as there were certain understandings right up front - that is, keep a short leash on him

The neighborhood has improved tremendously over the past 5 years. Temple is probably the fastest growing university in the US. And their fan support isn't that bad. I remember big crowds during the Pepe days. Chaney just drove everyone away with that insipid brand of basketball. But like all Philly fans, they expect to be entertained with a winner.
One thing I am so sick of are people knocking Temple on admissions standards. 17,000 high school seniors applied to Temple for the fall 2005 semester. 4,000 were accepted with an average SAT score of 1098 and an average high school GPA of 3.29. Considering what the admissions standards used to be at Temple, that is pretty good.
I believe the standards are only in reference to your basketball team. Glad to learn the academics for the rest of the student popluation ain't bad. But now that we are talking academics who is the worst school in the A10? Anybody want to admit to it?
I expect Fran Dunphy of Penn to be named to the post fairly quickly. He has a great rep, is a Philly guy, and is an established winner. He will have to prove he can recruit at this level, but if true it will be a good change for a league that has rarely hired established winning coaches in their 50's. I think his stature and overall persona will be up to the task of replacing a HOFer.

With all respect, Mac, drive 4 blocks on either side of Broad Street and you don't get the feeling you're in a fast growing neighborhood. If you view that part of the city from a recruits eyes who has already been to a number of other schools, a recruiter has their work cut out. Temple has historically overcome that by recruiting primarily inner city kids, many from their very neighborhood, and always led the league in Prop 48's. And TU attendance is shockingly bad and always has been. They were not selling out McGonigle Hall prior to the Apollo. And as to their support at the Linc for football.....

Actually Jack, real estate to the east of Broad St in many ways is spotty. But Temple and real estate investors are buying up big chunks. It may look like dilapidated housing, but is waiting for the wrecking ball. To the west of Broad, it is already happening.
