so they waited until Sept 1st because that allowed them to cut the hit down from 5 years at 7.5m per (if they'd transacted on August 31st) to 3 years at 6m per

but wait there's more - the buy out came at 7m+ less than the full original value which makes the cap hit 3 years at 5m per and more importantly opens up 38.2m under next summer's projected cap figure - 38.2m is the full value max for players with more than 10 years in the league - it is the precise amount for a max offer available to someone like, say... Kevin Durant - note: without the 7m less they would have had enough to sign a max sub 10 year dude like all the Kawhis and Kembas etc so this is a very specific kind of move here

This is true cap wizardry. That Lakers front office is starting to more closely resemble the Spurs, Rockets, and Celtics rather than the Kings, Magic, and Clippers.

If Thibbs will actually play him and if he can still play at all, he could fill a much needed bench role on that team.
