The Cardinals will place starting pitcher Chris Carpenter on the disabled list before Tuesday night's game against the Houston Astros because of bursitis in his upper back, club sources confirmed Sunday, and probably will promote Anthony Reyes to assume the Cy Young Award winner's spot in the rotation.

Carpenter threw in the Petco Park outfield for a second straight day Sunday but has yet to work from a mound since being scratched from Wednesday's start against the San Francisco Giants. Manager Tony La Russa suggested Sunday that Carpenter will not make another start until he completes a bullpen session.

"It makes sense for him to throw from a mound before he makes his next start," La Russa said. "That hasn't happened yet."
