CJ Bruton, Charles Smith

Remember CJ Bruton? We drafted him back in the '90s? Apparently we need a 4th point guard.

(Edit: now I've actually read the article, (a) we acquired his draft rights, we didn't draft him, and (b) he's just getting a try out in Portland, not necessarily for Portland.)

Also apparently, the NBA has no use for Spider.

If CJ Bruton never signed a contract with us - wouldn't we still hold his NBA rights?

Not so in 1990. Also, if he didn't play professionally for a year.....no.

What do you mean? We traded/acquired Bruton in 1997. He didn't ever play for us. What do you mean about "if he didn't play professionally for a year"??? Please explain.
Where's Roberto Bergessen when you need him?

Bergersen just left Pınar Karsıyaka of Turkey, he did a great job but they gotta save money. And Charles Smith singed a contract with Efes Pilsen for the reminder of the season however he wont be eligible in euroleague games till the next round.

Whoops, misread.

Well you keep the rights to a player for a maximum of a year after their last professional contract expires. So you'll hold a players rights indefinitely.....as long as he keeps playing somewhere. Be it US minor leagues or abroad. Maybe that's what happened, that he stopped playing. I don't know. I'm speculating. Maybe they just flat didn't want him. :whoknows:
Thanks Shambulls.

I don't know.
That's what you should have said in your first post.
CJ Bruton has been playing professionally with the Sydney Kings in the NBL (Australian League). He is one of if not the best international point guard not in the NBA. Very good outside shooter and good passer. I don't understand why the Blazers would need a 4th point guard though.
