Don't disagree except for one minor point-- I don't think the CAA is going to be an "up" league for a looooong while. What Kelsey did at Charleston has been derided by many coaching staffs in the league. They basically brought in kids that many of the other schools could not. It's been a not so open / open dialogue, which includes a whole lot of "let's look at what we want to be / do among many league members.

Interestingly, I think the Campbell entry will facilitate a split of the league much more quickly than it may have naturally occurred without their arrival. Campbell is already following the Charleston mode with their football program and I don't doubt for a minute that they will do everything possible to follow suit in basketball. I think the league is going to change sooner, rather than later and they are closer to the AE right now than they are to the MAC / A-10. Ultimately, I think the southern wing of the league will end up being a really good league.
Kinda going down a rabbit hole here for this thread, but we're having the convo, so here I go. I'm not shocked with the decision either, especially if he's looking for an opportunity to get to the Big Dance (no offense to any UA fans). To follow the "hometown kid" narrative, I'll offer up three schools in NY that could have interest.

1) Colgate - proven winner at the mid-major level that's losing some top scorers after this season (I think). I don't believe that Colgate has grad programs (apart from a Small Masters in Teaching Program), so this would depend on where Drumgoole is academically if this were to work.

2) St. Bonaventure - practically in Drumgoole's backyard, and are coming off an 8th place finish in the A10, so they could be looking for a proven scorer. Also, they offered Drumgoole out of high school, so they're familiar with him.

3) Syracuse - this might be a level above what is realistic for him, but hey, Syracuse is coming off a down year too, and with the coaching change it may come down to how much talent they're able to draw in from the portal. They already pulled in former 5 star JJ Starling, so this move does seem a tad unrealistic, but hey, who knows.

I'll add in a fourth option of Buffalo, since they're also in Drumgoole's backyard, and also recruited him out of high school.

I always forget just how many colleges are in Worcester.....Holy Cross, WPI, Clark, Assumption, Worcester State, think a couple more I can't think of.

Surprised the city itself is not a little nicer given that alone.

I am an alumnus of WPI that lived in Worcester and later worked in Worcester County. I have a total of ten years either living or working in the area.

None of the Worcester colleges are particularly large. Worcester State Univ may be the largest with a total enrollment of 5.5k but it is mostly a commuter school in a suburban part of the city that doesn't come off as large. WPI may be the next largest at about 5k undergraduates. It has nearly doubled since I went there in the 1980's. The other schools all have less than 3.5k undergraduate enrollments, including D1 Holy Cross. Furthermore, many of the college campuses are located far from downtown in suburban neighborhoods. Only WPI and Clark have traditional campuses near the downtown but most visitors never see them.

Worcester has the second largest population in New England mainly by virtue of its land size. It is not nearly as densely populated as other cities in the region such as Providence which has half the land mass. Worcester is also not surrounded by a cluster of large population towns unlike some other regional large cities. The city also unfortuantely does not really have any interesting landscape features. There is no significant river or body of water in its downtown area. It has a Water Street and Canal District downtown that have no relation to today as the river and canal was long ago covered up and has not been visible for over a century. The city doesn't have particularly interesting architecture other than Mechanics Hall, City Hall, and Union Station. Much of the city is built up with utilitarian buildings befitting the industrial city it once was. Its newer civic buildings such as the DCU Center and Polar Park which many critics have dubbed ugly follow this theme.

What I've heard through the coaching grapevine today. Ryan Cain from Keene State is getting an interview at UNH. Also, Holy Cross will at least talk with Chris Bartley from WPI. Holy Cross has actually talked with Bartley in the past. So I'm not sure how serious it is. Most likely Bartley will use it to get more money from WPI.
Ryan Cain from Keene State is not getting the UNH job. I'm shocked if it's true that they are interviewing him as I have heard nothing about it. AD Rich said she's looking for a coach to take UNH to the next level that's not a D3 Coach from Keene. I have complete faith in Associate AD Ken Dempsey who is running the search for the next coach. He's a great basketball guy and knows UNH.

If Cooley is making approx 3.5mm at Providence, why would he ever consider leaving, and then if so...leaving...for Georgetown?

He's made it past the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament....only 1 time in 17 years of D1 head coaching, and given his local ties to Providence and that they don't seem to care about whether they are in the NIT or NCAA Tournament, seems like a sweet situation to leave.

"ONE of" is the keyword here.

Well, Georgetown can come in with more money. It has more NIL money (something Providence and schools in its situation are going to start lacking in unless they cultivate new collectives and stuff to pop up), and, Georgetown is a much higher-upside job than Providence will ever be. Cooley probably has done everything he can accomplish there.

And as I've said in relation to a historically significant Catholic school on a much smaller scale, don't underestimate school administrators who very badly want to correct how badly things have gotten and how much they'll spend or commit to getting someone that will at least bring them back to being a tournament team again, at minimum.

That'd be quite the hire, especially because I suspect there was competition for him from similar schools in the region. Most people on here will judge him from a single game, but I think he's a capable coach. The only thing, besides it being a transitional situation for Merrimack, I'd argue he's moving to a harder gig to win at. But...the NEC as a whole is glorified D2 at this point and we saw firsthand the gap in play with Bryant's disappointing year. FDU was magnificent to pull off what they did, but their coach is out of there after this year probably as well (it shouldn't have taken this long for him to get a D1 job to begin with!)

For the record, that post hasn't been confirmed in any way. And the Samuri twitter has said as much.

I figured Gallo would be good at a fellow New England Catholic university, so I had him as a candidate for Holy Cross. But they may want to get more of a "name" or "established" HC. He's a solid coach and would likely translate well at another program in the region. He should be a legitimate candidate for a few jobs, but no guarantee he gets any of them. However, the NEC situation is still a mess, despite the historic FDU win.

Tobin will most likely not be at FDU next year. It is almost certain he goes somewhere else (Bucknell, Buffalo, Iona, who knows). And while I have no doubt he could rebuild if he stays, the Knights will lose the two 5th yr. Senior guards he brought with him from STAC anyway. Obviously, the press is great which will help recruiting and possible a new coach, but it likely a total rebuild after one magical NCAA Tourney.

Stong possibility Gallo is going to leave Merrimack so he can make some real money. NEC co-POY Jordan Minor is in the portal as is All-NEC player Ziggy. Merrimack has gone from preseason favorite to rebuild overnight.

Rob Krimmel at Sain Francis had all 5 starters, inlcuding co-POY Josh Cohen head to the Portal. He's done a solid job in Loretto, but is starting from scratch next year. They could easily finish last in the country.

LIU brought in Strickland and he had an awful first year. But word has it that Roc Nation is an 'investor' in the program (NIL) and they may look to build a NYC mid-major. They have a legit change to land high-caliber talent, I just don't know what that looks like next year or if it is really successful plan.

You are looking at SHU, Wagner, and CCSU to carry the water for the NEC next year, and while I think all three will be improved with a chance to win the league, it is likely another very down year for the NEC. :(

Right, with any of those accounts, if they bat .200 they're doing well. I could see Gallo still being in the mix at Holy Cross. He's not their top guy right now perhaps, because as you said, bigger names, but, we'll know for sure when it's official.

Apparently LIU is getting a TV series next year too through that deal.

Before this gets too ridiculous: the whole thing is tongue-in-cheek, for lack of a better phrase. It's just a random plane going from Burlington to Wichita. It's more of a statement on how everyone is trying to track private planes for coaching info these days. It's not intended to be legitimate info in any way., by its own admission. It's a goof.

I think we all understand that, but I need to know we all understand that.
