Craig Smith > Glen Davis

Now that LSU's out of the tournament, and Glen Davis hype has risen and is starting to fall, I'm throwing out an opinion I told HKF last week. That being that Craig Smith is a better pro prospect than Glen Davis.

Before I continue is there anyone else who agrees, or someone who thinks I'm crazy?

i dont think your 'crazy' as such, but i disagree.
if glen davis can get his weight down just a bit, without losing his strength he could have a long and very succesful nba career... he has got a lot of talent and moves around the court very well for a big guy.
he'll end up in the nfl if he doesnt succeed. lol

smith has showed some impressive signs, but not to the extent where id rate him above davis
Davis has more talent overall than Smith. Both guys are a bit undersized height-wise for the NBA, but Davis makes up for it in other ways while Smith does not.

Craig Smith is more athletic, and explosive. Where Glen Davis is nimble and quick for his size, Smith has a nice first step to get past the person defending him. I also like Smith better finishing around the basket and his rebounding.
You're right about them being two completly different types of big men. Davis' touch is better and his game translates over to the power forward position better than Smith. While Smith is quicker and can get up, he doesn't have much ability in taking a consistent 15+ footer or knocking in a turn around jumper. Smith reminds me a lot of Sam Clancy.
Yes I think Craig Smith is a more talented player as well
I definitely agree.

Along with Smith having a better post-up game, in my opinion, he is an excellent offensive rebounder and fights very hard for rebounds. He understands how to use his strength as leverage and he let's the rebound fall in front of him. He has a fundamental understanding of how to position his body. With his low offensive stance, he is able to catch bounce passes quite easily (along with Craig having a pair of hands that Mark Blount dreams about). He is a good passer, especially in BC's half-court set. The only thing that will stop his NBA prospects is his height. He needs to be a solid 6'7" and even then, he will be very undersized. He's too slow to play small forward so unless he wants to turn out like Brandon Hunter, he'll have to show that he can make up for his height difference with great combine results.

I've seen a lot more of Smith, than I have of Davis. He's a better pro prospect right now because he doesn't have any questions about him. When you look at Davis you know he's never going to be a factor in the pros unless he loses around 30 pounds.Craig Smith is going to play in the pros and he has a solid chance to be a pretty productive player.I just don't think you can say that much about Davis unless he loses quite a few lbs.If Davis can do that he has the potential to be a lot better though.
Davis is fat and can't jump. In the pros, that means he will get his shot blocked too many times. This guy isn't Danny Fortson.

All hype and worthless at the pro level. I know he has a great personality, but there is a reason they said he should play football. The NBA would eat him for breakfast.
I don't know that Davis has that much pro hype. He's projected as what a mid-late first rounder. I think Smith needs to develop a little bit better outside game, but I think he could find similar success to Ryan Gomes. Davis has a chance to be much better, very rarely does a prospect come out that has that kind of feel on the block.
Davis needs to call up Sean May and get some conditioning tips. I have no doubt if Davis completely resculpts his body, there's an explosive athlete under there. I do have doubts that he actually does it though.
Also Davis is incapable of running the court, did you see last night? A few more trips up and down the court and he would've passed out.

Also there has to be the major concern that once he goes pro and gets that money, he's going to starting eating good again.
Craig Smith I can see him being a Udonis Haslem type player in the NBA. Davis can't play in the NBA right now. He is not able to run the floor. In that UCLA game he was grabbing on to people trying to slow them down because he knew he wasn't going to be able to get back down there.

The same could be said of every player.

lol, I doubt money will factor into the man's eating habits. you dont need to be filthy rich to put a table load of food down.
Oh well I say Davis > Smith because if Davis fails in the NBA he can go to the NFL. If Smith fails he can go to the NBDL. Yea but on a serious note they are two different types of players Smith is alot more explosive around the basket, while Davis relies on his craftiness. It is obvious that Davis needs to lose weight. I think he will though, he has already lost a ton of it since he has been at LSU. Smith could be like a Corliss Williamson type to me.

Craig Smith would probably make the transition to the NFL better than Glen Davis, especially based on his short area quickness.

The whole premise of Glen Davis going to the NFL if he couldn't cut it in the NBA is contingent on him being able to play either on the offensive or defensive line. As a guy who was simply a huge running back in HS, who's to say he's even capable of making that transition.

You can lose all motivation for keeping in shape when you get that guaranteed pay check.

yeah, of course you can, but it's stupid to jump to conclusions on a guy that has been anything but lazy to this point. If he doesn't want to stay around the NBA for long then I'm sure he'll take to what you said, but if he has the same drive and determination that he now possess then it won't even be a thought crossing his mind.
