So, I've mentioned before that I got my wife hooked on the Grateful Dead within a few weeks of us dating (I put on American Beauty one morning while I got in the shower, and she fell for Box of Rain, hook, line and sinker. After much thought beforehand, I thought that would be the one to open the door).

We later made some mutual deadhead friends, and I swear they all figured SHE was the one who got ME into the Dead.

I can't really blame her for the late entry into Dead appreciation...her previous exposure was pretty much limited to a group of guys who lived near her in college, who played Touch of Grey over and over all the time. All Deadheads know that Touchheads are poseurs. Her good instincts kept here musically pure until she was ready.

She has some pretty good overall rock knowledge, for a woman. Forgive me if that sounds sexist, but in my experience, there are far fewer female music wonks in the world then there are males. When we met,she was into a lot of Cure, The The, Big Head Todd, stuff like that. Was no fan of top 40, etc.

So, we are driving to my parents house this afternoon, and she says "Oh yeah, I meant to ask you. I was listening to the radio on the way home last week and I heard this song...I knew right away it was by Frank Zappa, but I didn't know what it was. It was so musically cool, and funny...it had something to do with cowboys."

I said "Was it Montana? About a guy who buys a dental floss ranch?"

"Yeah! That was it. Great song. Remember that bar we used to go to that had the poster of Frank Zappa sitting on the toilet naked? Zappa was awesome."

Anyone else ever involved in a relationship with a woman who

1. Knows who Frank Zappa was
2. Recognizes FZ when she hears him
3. Respects FZ
and
4. LIKES his music?

Sorry, TomB, but it's damn hard to find a woman in my country who even knows who Frank Zappa was, let alone recognizing his music...

Zappa, for all i know, was never a big hit in Europe, for his music was definately NOT mainstream, and it took a lot of time and effort to get into his rock-jazz-fusion-i-don't-give-a-damn work...

Now, if your wife digs both G. Dead and Zappa, i'd say you definately got yourself a keeper... ;)

Tom, I'm actually very jealous of you and in times like this I usually enjoy quoting Moe Sizlack from the Simpsons.

"If I kill you, do I become you?"

:)

That's friggin cool though that you and your wife have so many things you can share, asthetically.

TomBo I must say I was thinking the same thing in my own situation earlier with my girlfriend:

I asked her to name as many SEC schools as she could, she named 8 out of 12

I asked her to name as many ACC schools as she could, she named 6 out of 11.

I asked her to name as manny Big 12 schools as she could, she named 11 out of 12!! (She missed Iowa St.)

Shes hooked on John Hiatt one of my personal favorite singers and wants to go to his concert later this month.

She loves live sporting events and even asked to go see a high school basketball game featuring LSU star recruit Tasmin Mitchell.

She sat soaked in the rain for TWO LSU football games this year and didnt say a word but...HELL YEAH!!!!!

I mean cmon am I spoiled or what. If I could just get her to have that damn threesome we came SO CLOSE too Id be made in the shade. :grinning:

We do pretty well with music together. Rock, we're pretty much on the same page. She likes the reggae, can get into the jazz, not a big fan of blues.

We have a lot of common ground with movies, except that she will get into some chick flicks that I can't tolerate, and she won't watch dumb action movies that I don't mind sitting through.

TV? That is where we are night and day. She watches sitcoms. I HATE sitcoms. She'll watch chick TV like Lifetime Channel, Oxygen Channel, stuff like that. Daytime, she likes Ellen, Oprah and Dr. Phil.

I watch basketball (duh) and to a lesser extent, other sports. I like The History Channel, A&E Biography, The Food Network (which a lot of women watch, but not my wife).

She likes none of those.

We both like The Sopranos. We've recently been getting caught up on 24 on DVD. We both liked That 70's Show for a while (an exception to my no sitcom rule -- and in fairness, when I was younger I was a sitcom nut and eventually became burned out, once they were so engrained in my system that I knew what would happen in an episode within the first 5 minutes of watching, and could predict a high percentage of the payoff jokes). We both like Simpsons and Family Guy. We'll both watch some standup on Comedy Central and like The Daily Show.

Otherwise, its hard to find stuff we'll both watch.

My wife has made it clear that I can get that fantasy right out of my head...

But she has been known on occassion to grab some beers and order a block of porn for us on PPV. That close enough of a freak to satisfy me!

Man I had a yes on the ole threesome deal from my girlfriend and her bestfriend was game but her friend lived in Oklahoma. Her friend was planning on coming down for Mardi Gras and I got us and some others a hotel in New Orleans. Im thinking Im going to finally get this thing done I got the two girls all I have to do is get them in the same place, right. Well turns out her friend got a boyfriend 2 weeks before she left for New Orleans so she said she couldnt cheat on him. I slept in a room with 7 girls and I was the only guy and NO LUCK...

She has since changed her mind on the situation...

You lucky dawg. Almost all of my ex-girlfriends have had little in common with me when it comes to main interests. Maybe that's why they're all 'ex's.......' Eh

I have simple criteria for the future Mrs Hap..

(btw the way, type without your index finger is hard...long story short: nerve damage)

1: like the beach boys and understand why I do.

2: like more of their unknown songs (of which, I prefer more).

3: know that Marcella was an earlier verse to "I just got my pay".

4: Know that "Carl and the Passions: So Tough" is actually the beach boys, but is a great way to trick people into liking their unknown gems.

5: won't think Im a pervert if I start singing "I'd love just once to see you (in the nude)".

6: Knows who Steve Colter is, and why I know him.

7: can name at least 4 former blazer coaches (there's been 10)

8: know to play (and like to play) pinochle

9: doesn't give a rip about the NFL

10: admit that there is no group that has better harmony

11: know that Pet Sounds (a moniker of mine) is not about being able to "make animal noises"..but a much better album than anything the Beatles put out. And Smile (in it's original form and Brians latest form) is better than anything the Beatles put out. And don't argue otherwise. 8)
