Fordham to the Patriot League ?????!

Should Fodham Go back to the PL for all sports? Patriot League fans, Fordham as an associate member in the league is very proud its association with schools that share a proud football tradition, as well as a commitment to academic excellence.

Despite opinions to the contrary, many alumni feel that returning to the Patriot League, for all sports, would be consistent with our overall objectives for the University. As i and many of my fellow alums have voiced to the administration conference we left nearly twenty years ago, is not the same. The level of competition has improved, and with the advent of athletic scholarships that trajectory will continue.

The top of the PL (in Mens Basketball especially) has proven that you play with anyone, on any given night ... and we have seen that in the Big Dance.

Best of luck to our fellow PL Schools ... see you on the field of competition this Fall.

Let me amplify-- Fordham belongs in the Patriot League, although expanding the number of conference members beyond ten will require some serious thought. The additions of Boston University and Loyola have stretched the PL in a couple of different directions-- BU in undergrad enrollment and Loyola becomes the lower end of endowment. Fordham remains squarely within a PL profile. With the BE7 likely to take on a few more schools, I am sure the Catholic tradition of those institutions might make that future conference appealing in other quarters. Now that the PL is awarding athletic merit aid across the board I hope Rose Hill can return to the fold. I am also tired of hearing A-10 fans in Wilmington and Cincinnati whine about scheduling the Rams.

I think Boston U would welcome Fordham in the PL in all sports. Another "city" school with a little bigger undergrad enrollment than the other PL schools. They could become a good rival to BU as BU has a lot of NY students. Also, its nationally known with very good academics.

If taken back, there would be the need to expand to 12 and not stay at 11. The 12th could be a bigger school as well - Hofstra or Drexel - Hofstra also a possible nice rival to BU (the Long Island connection and BU) and Drexel a possible good rival to Lehigh -engineering connection). Rivalries are missing in these conferences these days..............

Rivalries live on among the current PL members. Bucknell, Lehigh and Lafayette have played in the same conference since 1922. Bucknell was founded by good Baptists from... Colgate, and bonds between the institutions, both long non-sectarian, have endured. Holy Cross, Army and Navy have been playing the others now for over 30 years. American is the previous newbie, in 2001, and plays significantly fewer conference sports than the other 7 members but takes their share of conference. Holy Cross and Colgate have distinguished athletic histories, particularly in football. Holy Cross was one of UConn's big hoop rivals in the ECAC days of my childhood in suburban Hartford. One characteristic of PL athletic programs is their breadth-- everyone but American maintains more than 22 varsity sports, inside the PL and elsewhere. Fordham and Georgetown are current associate members of the Patriot League and have that same breadth.

I would love to see Fairfield or Drexel as a 12th and Villanova and/or Richmond as football affiliates. Fordham would be a great add for all sports.

While it makes complete sense, I doubt Fordham is headed to the PL anytime soon, especially in light of ex-Colgate AD David Roach taking the job in the Bronx some months ago.
